Neal/Sawtell marriage Ontario post 1911
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 11:24 BST (UK) »
According to the Canadian census of 1911, Mary Neal, from Ireland, was living with her uncle, William Arthur Burrows and his wife Ida Doyle, in Leamington.  At her uncle's funeral, in 1941 she was married to a WAlter Sawtell, manager of the Bank of Commerce in Wroxeter, Ontario, Canada.  They had a daughter Helen.  Both Mary J. Neal and Walter Sawtell are buried together in Wroxeter.

I am trying to find details of the marriage of Mary J. Neal and Walter Sawtell.  In particular I am trying to discover the identity of Mary Neal's parents.

Does anyone know how I can look up marriage records in Ontario during this period?

ANy information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Clarissabell.

shows Walter Arthur Sawtell (indexed as Walter A. Sawtell) was unmarried when he signed up for WWI in 1916. He was also living in Montreal at that point (and was a banker).

(I think the Ontario marriage is on A****** and she is listed as Mary Neill but I can't see the full info)
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Clarissabell,

You can check the Ontario Archives at

http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/family-history/the-records.aspx

to order microfilm records through inter-library loan if you have a rough idea of when the marriage took place. Check with them to see if they will lend to your country.

The Archives also has an extensive holding of Ontario newspapers & you may be able to find an obituary to answer your questions.

Good hunting.

Thank you sooo much for the help you have given me today.  You have all been extremely kind.  I am so delighted, I cannot say.  It is as I hoped, Mary Neill is connected to the Burrows family in Ireland.  Now my search can continue here - another sibling of Arthur's found.  Polar bear, you are a star!

Warmest regards,
Clarissabell

Hi Polar bear.  I wonder if you can check the details of the marriage record again - could there possibly be an error regarding Mary Neill's mother's name?  I have located the family (thanks to your help) in Donegal Ireland in the 1901 and 1911 censuses and the mother's name was given as Elizabeth H. Neill. I have found the marriage cert. for Elizabeth H. Burrowes and James Neill and Elizabeth is indeed Arthur's sister (having the same parents etc.)

I notice that the Grooms mother was also a Catherine... perhaps there was some confusion there, made somewhere along the line, perhaps in the registry office?

No offence intended, I just thought I should check.
Regards,
Clarissabell

Hi again

No offence taken  :). It is always good to check.

The mother is indeed Elizabeth Burrows. Had Elizabeth in my notes but I must have read the wrong line or something.
