The 1891 just shows Clackmannanshire - the 1881 shows Menstry and he is living with relatives

Have you checked Scotlands People for a birth for him?

Do any of the 3 entries suggest an illegitimate birth?

Hi John

Can't easily see a marriage for parents John McLaren and Elizabeth Brown - have you been able to find one?

Possibility that James' birth may have been illegitimate and therefore his birth entry would be registered under his mother's maiden name. There are at least 4 births for a John Brown circa 1871-2, with mother showing as Elizabeth Brown, no father's name. His entry could be any one of them. There are no births showing on IGI for a James McLaren or Brown in Clackmannanshire on IGI unfortunately.

Have you checked his death cert to see if there is anything new regarding his parents (sometimes you get a different marriage name for mother).

Monica  :)

I feel your pain John, I also have McLaren's in my motley crew, along with Lindsays  :-\
Looked through what I have so far, but no John McLaren's married to Elizabeth of any name.
By the way, my lot also come  from Menstrie so if I should come across him, I'll let you know.

Have a number of McLarens (John & James) Clackmannanshire area, all sailors of one kind or another, but cannot see any Elizabeth Brown or Elizabeth ?
Going on scottish naming patterns (if he did) the 1901 shows his daughters as
Euphemia, Janet, Christina and Isabella..no Elizabeth ??
Will have another look at my lot  :D see if I can come up with anything.
