Birth - Rose Head
« on: Thursday 02 September 10 13:00 BST (UK) »
First post on Roots - so here goes.

Looking for birth of Rose Head in Lewes 1854 or 1855.

First entry on census is 1871 aged 17
Living with father Richard Head (his name is also shown on Rose's marriage certificate) but believe Jane Head on census is Rose's Stepmother.

Rose married Samuel Hadley in 1877 and died a widow in 1920 aged 66

Have been searching for 2 years with no luck.  Can anybody help?

Hi welcome to Rc
going to bombard you with quesions now!
Ok so she first appears on the 1871 census with father Richard and Mother (or Stepmother Jane)
If she was born mid 1850’s Lewes then she should appear in 1861
Do you have Richard in 1861?
Could it be that Rose is the child of Jane and therefore not a Head by birth but after Jane marrying Richard she took on that name?
Have you found Richard and Jane’s marriage?

Ok actually having seen the census image now it does state quite clearly the Currie children belong to Jane and Rose is listed before these followed by two younger ‘Heads’ presumably these belong to both Richard and Jane
So it would seem that Rose is in fact the daughter of Richard and not Jane as you said.

So if Richard is unmarried it is likely then that Rose doe not belong to him but to his first wife if there was one previous to Jane and you will need to find her maiden name to then find Rose name she was registered under.

Hi all

Rhoda Rose is 14 in 1871.

The 1861 census shows a 3 year old Rose Ade born Lewes with mother Rhoda, a shoemaker's wife. Rhoda was born Selmaston ca. 1838.  A 1851 census search finds she was probably Rhoda Norman. A Rhoda Norman marries in Jun 1857, Lewes district. One of the possible grooms (mistranscribed on FreeBMD) is Richard Head.

By the 1881 census after Rose had married Samuel Hadley, her father, wife Jane and a few kids are still in Portsmouth.

But now Richard is calling himself Chadwick B. Head, and Jane is Elizabeth J. The Kid's names pretty much confirm its the correct family, and his PoB of Bristol .....
