WELLER of Montreal and Toronto
« on: Friday 03 September 10 22:03 BST (UK) »
Charles WELLER born 1879 (baptism) or 1880 (census) was named as next-of-kin by his brother Normand on joining the army in 1914, and living at 244 St Martin Street, Montreal.  Their brother William or Billy 'Whirlwind' WELLER was a  boxer, Canadian lightweight champion, who fought 153 fights and was only beaten twice.  No records of his boxing career seem to have survived.  Any further information about any of these brothers would be very welcome.

Also, any details of their English cousins who emigrated to Toronto in the 1930s - Cyril WELLER born 1885, Winifred 1887, Mildred Olive 1886, Muriel 1891 and Phyllis 1895.  I know lots about their brother Bernard, who distinguished himself in the Zeebrugge Raid in WW1, but virtually nothing about the rest of the family.

Thanks,

Sam

You may already have this but thought I would post it anyway as it may give you more to go on.

www.weller.org.uk/cgi-bin/FamilyTree/ShowFamily.pl?

go to Person View; under Select a Person; William Weller Born 1880-11-13

Some interesting information and may give you some new areas to search.

household 67 lines 42-48
1901 Census of Canada, District QU, Montreal City 178, Sainte Marie Ward

Charles Weller, head, b. 1860, age 40
Johana, wife, b. 1862, age 37
Charles, son, b. 1880, age 20
William son, b. 1882. age 18
Lidga daughter, b. 1884, age 16
Sarah daughter, b. 1889, age 11
Forreste, son, b. 1887, age 13 (Sept. 28, 1887)
I think Forreste may be the Norman F. Weller that you found in WW1

There is another Charles Weller, b. 1879 that you may get confused with  brother of William
Montreal City 177, Saint Louis Ward
Margaret, wife
They show up on the 1911 census living in St. boniface, Manitoba.

www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/index-e.html
1881 Census of Canada, Quebec
90 Montreal, St. Lawrence Ward, Page 5
#22
Charles Weller, age 30, married
90 Montreal, St. Lawrence Ward, page 9
#52
Jinet Weller, age 21, married, b. Scotland
90 Montreal, St. Lawrence Ward, page 10
line 1
Charles Weller, age 2
line 2
unnamed male, age 4 months
This may be William but on transcribed records is down as Charles.
The other option is that Charles, age 2 is the one that shows up on the 1901 census in Montreal and in the 1911 census in Manitoba and the one tht is 4 months is the brother to William and Norman F. (Forreste)
You can view the original documents at the site.

The Attestation papers are available to view on line but you can order the complete military files through the site. Most files contain about 40 pages and contain valuable information for researchers.
