They married 4 Apr 1874 Bristol. Joseph was 25 and his father was William.

Thanks Ian these are the right people. Joseph and Jessie's Grandmothers were sisters, nothing like keeping it in the family. They could have taken two young children with them, the others were all born in Nelson

Hi Wint,
I am a distant cousin, I think. I am a granddaughter of Jessie Hadfield, nee Winter. I have family tree with the same dates for childrens births, but we always believed Jessie was born in Wales. Published family history states Joseph and Jessy Winter came from Abergavenny, Wales,  in 1886. They lived in Johnsonville, Wellington, before moving to Nelson in 1894. Perhaps they lived in Wales for a time before coming to New Zealand. Mrs Winter had a brother, Colin  Houlson, who was a photographer in Abergavenny. I have photos of some of them and family trees showing their decendants, and can give you a lot of other family stories if you would like.

Elizabeth Ada Winter (Bessie) was a teacher for the Hadfield, Cunliffe, and younger Winter children at Awaroa from 1894. She married John Conner in 1904. Jessie Winter married Frederick George Hadfield in 1909. William Isaacs Winter married Ivy Adele nee Hadfield after her first husband William Roberts died. Christiana Winter died at Awaroa in 1933. George Winter, who had gone to Australia as a missionary, died in 1926 after being bitten by a snake. Robert died in 1925 in Nelson after contracting influenza. The Hadfields considered the Winter family cultured and educated, noting artist materials and musical instruments in their possessions when they first arrived at Awaroa. However, they thought the boys looked too frail to be farmers. William (Will), who died in 1959, was described as poet, woodcarver, botanist, and Wainui Hill roadman.
