Diocese of Carlisle Marriage Bonds/Licences - HOLM(e) & (H)Ellen COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 09:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I just saw some kind person was offering to do look ups in the marriage bonds.  I have been trying to find the marriage of my ancestors George Holm(e) and Isabel(lla) (H)ellen at some time roughly between about 1777 and 1782 when their first son, my 5 times great grandfather, John Holm(e/s) was christened at Windermere to George & Isabel(lla) in July 1782.

I believe I found the christening of Isabella at Kendal via the Family search site in 1757 to John.  I haven't narrowed down which George could possibly be the right one from the many christened at around the right sort of time yet, but going off this christening for Isabella, if this is the right one (and I know her father was called John as his name's listed as the maternal grandfather one 1 or 2 of the christenings) then I presume the marriage would have taken place sometime between around 1777 and 1782.

I don't believe they married in Kendal, Isabella's father, John Hellen was listed in the 1777 window tax in the Stricklands area (I believe this was him anyway as one of the christenings to George & Isabella has him at Strickland Roger.)  So I guess the marriage could have taken place anywhere between possibly Burneside, Selside, Windermere, Heversham, Crosthwaite, or possibly Crook or Winster.

Sorry to go on a bit, thought i'd give as much information as possible.  Thanks in advance for any help.

John

John
Sorry about the delay.

There is no marriage of a George Holm(e)s in the Carlisle marriage bonds in that time period.  Neither is there a marriage of any H(E)llen.  You might be interested in the marriage of a John Helling in Wigton in 1780.  Otherwise, there is the marriage of a George Holme in Dillaker, Kirby in Kendale in 1769 (then aged 25).

I also had a look quick look at marriages of other Holmes in that time period but there are no obvious connections to your George.

But note that the books I have only cover those marriages by licence (not banns) that survived.

Let me know if there's any other avenue to explore.
regards
Deborah
