Lance Corporal William John Price
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 18:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information about my great Grandfather William John Price and his time fighting in the First world war according to my Father and uncle he was killed in the battle of the Somme, and I found the death of one soldier a Lance Corporal William John Price who served in the 2nd Battalion in the South Wales Borderers who was sent to the front line on 13th August 1914 he was killed on the very first day of the Somme 1st July 1916 and was buried at the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 4 A.
In the 1911 census my William John is living in the Rhondda and worked as a builders foreman could they be the same William John Price, if someone could tell be it would be brilliant as I really want to know about my Grandfather who died in this senseless war leaving behind a wife and young children.

Thank You

I dont think I made myself clear when I wrote it out I wanted to know if there was a way to figure out if my great grandfather William John Price was the same Lance Corporal William John Price that served in the South Wales Borderers.

The CD 'Soldiers Died in the Great War' has a WJP who was killed in action 1 July 1916. He was born in Swansea and enlisted at Brecon. His number was 10575.

Can't see an immediate match in the surviving service records for that name and number.

That one isnt my great Grandfather then I do have three other possibilities if I give you some information about them could you please check them out for me

1, Private William John Price of the 218th Coy, Machine Corps (Infantry) he was killed on December 2nd 1917 and his service number is 67929

2, Serjeant William John Price of the South Wales Borderers, 12th Battalion and was killed on November 26th 1917 his service number was 16170

3, Private William John Price of the Monmouthshire Regiment, 3rd Battalion and he was killed on May 26th 1915 and his service number was 1747.

I you could do this for me it would be great but if not it's ok thank you for the information anyway it has narrowed down my list.

William John Price, L/Cpl 10575, 2nd Battalion SWB was born St Mary's, Swansea and enlisted Brecon, according to SDGW.

I can't see a surviving service record for him.

It looks like he was a pre-war Regular, probably enlisting around November / December 1910.
