Dear everyone

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone is researching in Berwick upon Tweed if they could look up (anywhere?) for my Ggg grandfather Robert Dewar's birth, about 1801,  who married Bathsheba Nash 22 Aug 1831, at Saint Leonard's, Shoreditch London.   All I know about his possible birth is that he states on all the census in London that he was born in Berwick upon Tweed, Scotland (sic).   Robert is described as a labourer on the census, so I gather he had no money, but why he left Berwick upon Tweed and travelled so far south to make a living I really can't imagine.  All his children went on to join the printing trade in all its varieties, lithography, press managers, errand boys for printing works.

If I am fortunate enough to find someone who could look up then it would be great as well to know who his parents were, so that I can at least make a little opening in this wall.

There is another person,  James Dewar who married Elizabeth Ann Nash 9 July 1826 St Matthews, Bethnal Green, London, who I suppose could be his brother, although I have not managed to find him on a census, only on Pallots Marriage Index.  Could they have married sisters?

There doesn't seem to be a fiche for the Trinity church available to purchase over the years I need around 1800, otherwise I would do that as well to try and trace him.  I live in SAfrica.  I have looked everywhere on the net for some help but there seems to be not a lot for Berwick upon Tweed, and I don't have a lot to go on either as you can see.    I dont know enough about Berwick to know if he says he was born there, much as someone may say they were born in London, but you need a parish name to find them!

He is not on FamilySearch perhaps because the Trinity church is not on there?

  Holding thumbs!!

Regards
Caroline

Thanks Sharon...... I'd forgotten about that!  Silly.

But I don't think that is him because all the census records point to him being born 1801 (ages from 1841 = 40, 50, 60 and 1871 = 70)and his death record on BMD is Dec 1880 aged 79.  I don't think a three year difference would be consistent with what I know about these things.   One year I could consider, but 3 seems to much.

Thanks for your help.

Regards
Caroline

Oh!  another thought............... could they really have baptised him 3 years late?  I have a couple baptised a few months late, but none that late.

I have remembered why I didn't think that was him.  This is what is on Family Search, and it doesn't seem likely he was baptised later because this Robert has a brother baptised in 1800 and a sister in 1803.

Thanks for this info but I don't think he is mine.   Also, my Robert moved to London where he mrried Bathsheba NASH in Bethnal Green, London on 22 August 1831, so he did not marry in Berwick upon Tweed.  (Strange co-incidence that there are Nash's involved for the Robert you mention, and the one that I know is mine in London.

Oh wow!  That's interesting, thanks so much.  Makes me wonder whether the James mentioned in my first post is a brother of his after all, one would assume James might be a witness.

Could you tell me where the marriage took place .... ie which church?
