John Fisher
« on: Friday 10 September 10 18:46 BST (UK) »
am searching for information on John Fisher, born Abt 1847 in Edinburgh Scotland.

He went to South Africa as a Foot Soldier in the 80th Regiment of Foot, part of the British Army.
In 1877 he was based in King Williamstown S.A. this from a letter on file, sent home to relations in Scotland.

Later, from a further letter written in 1884, by a relative of his in Scotland, stating that he had bought his way out of the Army and listed his address as "John Fisher Kimberley Waterworks Diamond Fields South Africa".

I am trying to find out what happened to John Fisher after 1884.Did he come back to Scotland or live on in South Africa?

Hello Middlebank

Have you searched the various shipping records to be found on many sites, which may, or may not list John Fisher, returning to the UK?

Also, the 1891 and 1911 British Censuses to see if he is in the UK?

Do you perhaps have any marriage records?

Cheers

Hello Middlebank

On the South African N.A.A.I.R.S. site there are many references to various John Fishers, including:

  CSO 984 1884/4042
John Fisher of Durban applies to be Constable, at Tongaat, on the North
Coast of Natal.  The date of course fits with his buying himself out of the
  military.

Also;

In the TAB Archives of N.A.A.I.R.S, John Fisher, 24 March, 1896 of  Krugersdorp  in the Transvaal, applied to Government House to have himself re-patriated.

Either of the above, may or may not be the person you seek, but if search NAAIRS yourself, you might well find data on the John Fisher you seek?

Cheers

Thanks for your help in my search.

I am good with John Fisher up to the time he appears in the 80th Reg. in 1877.

There are no conclusive entries as to Census records in 1891 and 1901 in Scotland, the name I am afraid is way to common. Also marriage records. Even a death search on Scotlandspeople was not conclusive.

I will take a closer look at the N.A.A.I.R.S. site as you suggest.

The Muster rolls for the 80th Regiment of Foot for the years in question are available at Kew near London, but not on line yet.

Take care.

Hello Middlebank

I guessed that with John Fisher's name being as it is, and having tried to search some records for you, that the frequency of its occurence hinders!

Wonder if the records held by the Chelsea Pensioners might have something?

Wishing you luck with the NAAIRS and looking forward to hearing how you get on.

Cheers
