Thanks for taking the time to reply as this is an old post! I am wondering how you know the local name was Gatens. They seem to be very elusive to any searcher who is not privy to details such as Townland and DED ( especially when searching from New Zealand.) I found the family in 1901 and 1911 using your guidance but I dont think they are mine. There are too many unfamiliar names for this Gatens lot to be connected to my Gatens  ancestors who came to Port- Glasgow Scotland some time after 1861.  Thanks for your interest   Regards Orkrad.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hi orkrad,
In July we will be in Ardara for festival.
During the day we go out and about. We will look around the area for any clues about your family.

Hi Oakrad

I know about the McGettigan/Gatens name because they are from the adjoining townland to my mother's home.  Growing up we used to go there on holiday and I was always confused when one day they were referred to to as Gatens and then the next they were called McGettigan.

Hi orkrad,
We went to our Bluegrass Festival in Ardara, it was really good fun.
On our day out, the weather was awful, the rain was almost horizontal and the wind, well it was windy.
The nearest graveyard that could I see was on the road into Portnoo in a place called Clooney.
As I say the weather was so bad we couldn't get out of the car.
The Portnoo beach is lovely. We will be going again next year and we will go there and to the graveyard and any other that we find. I have kept your info for the next trip. Lets hope it's dry and no wind.

Thanks Maggsie for thinking about my Gatens lot. I bet you enjoyed the festival even if the weather was not so wonderful I'm sure the warmth of the kinfolk of the area made up for it.  Regards orkrad
