ok suppose Walter was adopted.  For instance, suppose his parents died and he went to live with Hugh and Martha McBroom.  He would not show up in the  church records.  Suppose he lived with Hugh and Martha's family, then at age 20 decided to leave home for USA.
Where would I begin my search?  Adoption?  Relatives that passed away that had a young Walter in the family?

McBroom - adoption?
« Reply #19 on: Saturday 11 September 10 05:50 BST (UK) »
Tryng to find information on my GG Grandfather Walter McBroom.  Born around 1831.  I have his US naturalization document and he states he was a native of County Antrim Ireland.  He arrived in New York on May 21, 1850.  He settled in Indiana USA.
After arriving in US Indiana ...
1st wife
Mary Jane Lawghery 1832 – ?
1st child
Hugh L McBroom 1857 – 1932

2nd wife
Ann Jane Todd 1842 – 1925
Children
Martha McBroom 1863 – 1932
Samuel Todd McBroom 1865 – 1946
Ann Jane McBroom 1868 –  ?
Mary L McBroom 1870 – 1879
William J McBroom 1871 – 1872
Robert Miller McBroom 1872 – 1927

According to his statement on naturalization paperwork, he embarked on his voyage to US in Belfast Ireland.

Seeing that his first son was named Hugh and his first daughter was named Martha - I have followed that path and found a Hugh McBroom b: 1796 that married a Martha MacKay and they had 8 children in County Antrim, but none of the 8 kids were named Walter.

Suppose Walter was either adopted or was a relative and was living with Hugh and Martha.  He would not show up in the First Presbytarian Christing records, but could have still lived with them.

When he settled in Indiana USA, he may have honored his "parents Hugh and Martha" by naming his first born after them.   Possibility?  Likely?   Thoughts?

Hi

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread. I use mainly ancestry.com.
I found one of my ancestors was a McBroom that emigrated from Scotland to Co Antrim. He was Rev John E McBroom born 1630 in Portpatrick died 1682.
It is ironic that I found out about him a week after I visited where I was born.. in Belfast (to Scottish parents)
Anyway let me know if you want to know more.
Kind Regards
Ian

Welcome to RootsChat, Ijmscot  :)

The OP (broomer5) hasn't been online here since December 2010, so you may not receive a response. If his email is still current, then he will receive a notification of your post and hopefully reply.

Good luck!
