Hall Family - Grantham
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I'm looking for a chap named Thomas Hall.
The only fact I have is that he was a Sergeant in the Royal North Lincoln Militia and that his son Edward was a Drummer in that same militia 'for twenty years' according to Edward's obit in the Hull Packet for 1841...
Edward was born in the 1770s in (I believe) Grantham.
Lincolnshire is new territory for me so is anyone able to find this family in parish records or directories?
Thank you
Kirk
PS
I am going to post this on the military forum as well

Hi Kirk,

On the IGI there is a Edward Hall baptism at Horbling 27 April 1775 with parents Thomas & Eliz. I am in Grantham library on Wednesday and will have a look to see if they have the parish records for Horbling. Horbling is a village 14 miles east of Grantham .If you Google Horbling it gives you info on village etc.

Kathy

PS.Have already checked in St Wulframs Church parish records but no luck.

Thanks Kathy,
that's very nice of you.  I do know that Thomas was in the militia and when Edward died in 1841 they said he was aged sixty four.
Hopefully this Horbling connection will bear some fruit! :)

Hi Kirk,

Have been in to Grantham library and they do not hold the Parish records for Horbling so I checked with the librarian and the Parish records for Horbling are held at Stamford library. For the baptisms for year 1775 they  are on Reel 799 Section 1/1.

Sorry I could not help but someone else on this great site might be able to.

Kathy

Hello
I also have a connection to Thomas and Edward Hall.
And was wondering if you have found any more information about them since this was posted.

Thank you

Hi All,

BAPTISMS, St Andrew, Horbling, Lincolnshire to THOMAS/ELIZABETH Hall;
EDWARD 27 April 1775
THOMAS 09 October 1776
JANE 14 February 1782
WILLIAM 23 April 1783

MARRIAGE;
Thomas HALL Married Elizabeth PEPPER, 12 April 1774, St Andrew, Horbling
A John PEPPER Married a Rebekah HALL, 06 April 1772
(Siblings Marrying Siblings possibly)

BURIALS;
THOMAS Hall, 11 August 1824, Age 77, Birth c 1747)
ELIZABETH Hall, 18 July 1823, Age 69, Birth c 1754)

OOPS, after all I've found there is this BURIAL;
Edward HALL, 30 December 1838, Age 63, Birth c 1775

So this may not be your Edward as this one seems to have been born, lived, and died in Horbling :P
(Unless there was more than 1 Edward living in Horbling)

(Source of all Records FreeREG)

When/where and to whom did your Edward born c 1770's Marry?

Trish :)

Hi Trish,
yes I think that that is the wrong Edward Hall
My Edward moved about a bit.  He married Ann Brown at South Weald, had his first born child at Norwich and then gravitated back up north, ending up in Hull.  He was apparently the leading Drummer for the Militia and his father Thomas had been a Sgt. in the same militia . .
Edward died in 1841
Ann was born in a place I think is called Overally (?) in Staffordshire but the spelling in the register of births was indistinct.  In Hull the family got heavily involved in the Ebeneezer Chapel and then the Primitive Methodists.
Interestingly the son John married ELizabeth Borass (various spellings) on an as yet unknown date and her brother was the parish clerk for St Michael's Lincoln . . . but how this happened and when I don't know - but then that is what makes FT research so interesting!
