A total guess, on this page about Penygraig: http://www.francisfrith.com/pen-y-graig//memories/new

They mention miners holidays to Barry Island or Porthcawl, so it could be one of them....and it might not :)

The beach seems to be a bit too shingely for Barry or Porthcawl. Can anyone make out whats written on the back of the empty deckchair? Or title of newspaper?

I agree, too much shingle for Porthcawl or Barry,  Can you scan the area of the deck chair and newspaper at a higher resolution?

Don't think it's Porthcawl, don't think there have or could have been any chimneys seen from that beach, don't recall seeing any at Barry either or Aberavon, but there are places that have chimneys near Aberavon now but don't know if they can be seen from the beach area, perhaps somewhere near there?

Penarth is a strong possibility.

The chimneys are actually wooden posts on the mobile jetty.

It is possible it could be The Knap (aka Cold Knap) in Barry as this is pebbly.

Just an idae!

These type of mobile jetty's were used on Whitmore Bay, (Barry Island beach) to enable people to walk dry footed from the beach to the pleasure boats that used to do trips around the bay. The may also have done trips from the Knap, a bay further west from Whitmore Bay. The pebble beach is steeped and has levels as it goes down to the sea. Immediately beind the beach is a road and the photo appears to have this going by the street lights which I do not think are there any more.
