Can't find 56 Church Road, Tranmere, anybody help please?
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 15:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have recently discovered that my Gt Aunt Margaret Roberts died at 56 Church road, Tranmere end Dec 1919 - early Jan 1920..

She may have lived there but I think it more likely that she was visiting relatives at the time of her death because she was buried in Oswestry, where she had lived all her life..

The problem is that I tried to find the address on the 1911 Census and there doesn't appear to be a No 56 Church Road.

Can anyone help please?

Cheers

Barbara.

Hi junev,

Thanks for your reply.

Is St Catherine's hospital an old hospital ?

I've dicovered that there is a 56 Church Road in Birkenhead as well.

I don't know that area, so I'm not sure which is the right address or are they one & the same. ???

Church Road was a Poor Law Institution,  (and Union Infirmary) and in 1919 the Registrar-General received the sanction of the Ministry of Health to alter the Regulations issued for the guidance of Registrars of Births and Deaths in such a manner as to authorize them to omit all direct reference to Poor Law Institutions in future entries recording deaths of persons therein, and to describe the place of death in such alternative manner as the Guardians may suggest and as may be approved by him. A similar arrangement in regard to births in Workhouses had been operating since the 1st. January 1905, and the alternative address then approved would in future be used in the case of deaths. The alternative address in this case was 56 Church Road.

Tranmere is a district of Birkenhead. It is actually older than Birkenhead though.

Hi Certacito,

Thanks for your help in clearing that one up for me.

Hi Alan m,

Thank you  for the information about the Birkenhead Archives etc.

I have been in touch with them this morning and a kind lady there searched out and found some information for me, re my Gt Aunt.

So I feel as though I'm getting somewhere at last.

Thanks again to you both.

Thanks for that. I didn;t know about those registers. My great grandfather died in St. Caths back in 1911. BTW I was born there. Also the nurses used to wear great uniforms, but that's a story for another forum  ;D

I'll see what I can find next time I'm in town.
