Collins and Mcmanus help please?
« on: Sunday 12 September 10 13:23 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been doing this family tree stuff for about a year now but no way consider myself an expert. I have become stuck a few times and the nice people on this forum have helped me and I hope they can do the same again please ;-)

I have started to research my wife's side of the family and am stuck. My wife's uncle found the attached wedding certificate in a cupboard.I have traced the Collins family back to a George Collins b.1825 marrying an Eliza b.1829  but I cant seem to link them to the wedding certificate. Really hope someone can help me with this one please?

JOHN

Also a letter was found in the same box from a Sarah Mcmanus who must have migrated to New York. I think it must have come from the same side of the family. It mentions a Emma,a Eliza and a Michaels wife and a richards wife? It also mentions the American civil war. Has anyone any ideas about this?

Hello John, I expect the obvious answer would be that he is the grandfather or father of George Collins. It would be hard to make a guess which generation he is was as he is a widower.

Can you give how you got back to George and perhaps we may be able to help.

This marriage is also listed on Ancestry.  It really doesn't add much more, other than the witnesses Daniel Price & John ? (Ladd ?)

Oh, and one more thing..... I'm not sure that the letter was written by Sarah McManus.... I think maybe only the footnote at the bottom is from her.   The writer must have been pretty elderly, because she mentions that she can't hear very well, and asks for letters to be sent in a clear hand, because the family can no longer read the letters to her.  She says "maybe if Emma can practice", and it is sent to 'dear sister'.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Hi , I thought a first that someones name was 'Living Wild', until I saw that you meant they were still living!!!!

George is with his mother Elizabeth & brother John on the 1851 census
Elizabeth Collins (wid) 64 born Cripplegate
George 26 Flute maker
John 23 Brass finisher both born St.Sepulchre

1841 St.Pancras
Elizabeth 55
Sarah 20 Teacher
Elizabeth 15
John 12

Could be a bapt. for George at St.Leonards Jan 1825 born 20/12/1824
at same time Edward born 15/9/1818
parents William & Elizabeth New Inn Yard Brass finisher

On a tree on (A) William is given as the father of George he is born Westwell Kent 1799?

Should have read ' on a tree on (A) a William is given as the father of George, he was born Westwell Kent 1799?'
