James REILLEY/REILLY
« on: Monday 13 September 10 14:32 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone
I am researching the Reilly family for a friend and have made contact with a relative
who has been trying to find the death of James Reilly for 20 years.
I'm hoping a genius here might be able to help us with some clues.

James Reilley/Reilley/Reily - born -date and place unknown
married Mary Ann Connell 19/2/1849 (have certificate) Both living at South Yarra.
Somewhere along the road she uses the name Condell and this side
of the family is well researched, so no info need for them.

They had children
Barbara Ann 1850 Sth Yarra- married Henry Hortle-died 1936
Mary Jane 1852 Mt Aitkin - married John McKenzie- died 1924
James no birth found (marriage says born Geelong)- married Emma Slater - died ?
William no birth found (marriage says born Geelong)-married Sarah Tuckwell-died 1927
Catherine Ann no birth found-married James Tapp- died 16/9/1930
Thomas 1859 Prahran-married Ellen Ryan-died 1899
Bridget no birth or death found - named
in mothers probate as Bridget Bottomley - deceased before 1925
John Michael no birth found- died 1951
Ann born 1st July 1867 registered 23/1/1868 Mortlake (have certificate)
Mother lists herself as a widow. Interestingly, on mothers death certificate,
she is named as Ann Ellis Reilley (that needs some research  ;) )
Was she really a widow? Is James the father of the last child?

I have checked all the usual places, inquests, newspapers, wills but
nothing conclusive.
Hoping someone has some ideas for me please.

Thanks
Raylen

Hello  there Raylen

Very hard to offer you anything you may have missed

re the death mentioned in your linked post

REILEY James  1876  age 53 years
Birth place, Father and Mother are unknown
Reg#10315

did your friend end up buying this certificate ?

If he is the missing husband and least  the certificate would rule it out  should have  th wifes names and children etc.

Is anyone else buried with Mary Ann Condell ?

Did you explore  the possibilites of  O'Reily

sorry no help but  looking

Jenn

Hi  Jenn

Thanks for your reply.
Regarding certificates - we have narrowed the James Reilly/Riley(and various spellings)
deaths in Victoria down to  possibly 6 so far. The 1876 one mentioned is
a possible but we are trying to see if he really had died around 1867 - the time
his wife claimed she was widowed.

Mary Ann is buried alone but named as 'wife of James'.

As well as trying to eliminate all the non relevant deaths, also trying
O'Reilly (all spellings) as well as checking convict records to see if
there is a clue there.

Sigh  ::)........  the search continues

Looking for some help ....again  :-\

I found this report of an inquest for a James Reiley

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/6484200?searchTerm=james%20reiley
The Argus 17th March 1863

FATAL ACCIDENT AT MOUNT BLOWHARD. On Friday an inquest was held by
the district coroner, at the Mount Blowhard Hotel, upon the body of James Reiley,
a carter from Ballarat. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased, a native of Ireland,
was fifty years of age, and at the time of his death, was camped with his
wife under a loaded dray, on' the road between Ascot and Ballarat, about a
mile from the Mount Blowhard hotel. Ballarat Star, March 16.1863

My problem is, I can't seem to find his death recorded in Victoria
and from a list of inquests provided by Alison in my previous post
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,472379.0.html

REILLY  James.  Place: Mount Shadwell Year: 1863
Reference: 1005 Cause: Fall From His Horse
(found this one - is a 16 year old boy)
REILLY James.  William Place: Ballangeich Year: 1873 Reference: 972
Sex: M Cause: Accident Drowned { This is probably the 6 Year old}
REILLY  James.  Place: Aberfeldy Year: 1877 Reference: 352
Cause: Suicide strangled
REILLEY  James.  Age: 81 Place: Castlemaine Year: 1881
Reference: 1170 Cause: Inflammation Lungs

he doesn't seem to be there either.

Any advice how to find the death or the inquest please?

Oh cando!

Once again you've done it  :-*

Thank you so much.

I'm now wondering which is the correct spelling -
the indexes or the newspaper.  ???

I did wonder that as well and I would think you would need to see the other details on the death certificate.  It would be easy however to read an R as a K.

I wonder where he was buried.  I had a quick look at Ballarat
http://ballaratcemeteries.com.au/php/search.php
and Dowling Forest, however only graves with headstones are listed on the latter.

Perhaps the newspaper is correct as much of the information would have been verbal and Reiley and Keiley certainly don't sound alike.   Dare I say....you need the cert.   :)

Raylen I wonder if the accident was also reported in the Ballarat Courier  Think the paper was established then....memory isn't too good lately.

Cheers
Cando

Edit...Courier commenced in 1867 so scrap that idea.
