Thank you, LoganH, this is certainly the family and showed where they lived.  I understand Josepha to be the last born, but what happened to Josepha (the mother) after this?

Merlin - yes, one son Frederick Henry moved to Victoria (had a daughter Josepha Eliza); also their grandson, my grandfather Henry (had a daughter Katherine Josepha).

Thanks for all this,

John

The death notice of Henry BAWDEN in 1909 does not mention Josepha only the children so one would assume she was deceased.

Thanks, Cando - I have been told she predeceased her husband Henry which would fit in with the assumption one would make from this notice.  Therefore Josepha must have died between the birth of her last child in 1868 and 1909.  I have no reason to believe she ever left SA, so where and when did she die?  It is very frustrating!

Here is Frederick's Funeral Notice Thursday 13th Aug 1936 Argus.

Bit hard to read.

I have just had a thought!  I wonder if Josepha Bawden died under circumstances which necessitated an inquest?  Does anyone know of an index of inquests in South Australia for the period 1868 -1909?  Perhaps I should make this a separate post?

John I there are many bdm records missing in SA.  There is a book on the topic and have been meaning to chase it up.

Graham Jaunay has written about it in one of his newsletters.
http://www.jaunay.com/newsletter/newsletter30.html

There were many opportunities for events to be not registered or the registration to be lost in the chain of reporting.
and
....the published BDM Indexes for SA record the references produced by the Principal Registrar and these do not relate to the District Records. Not all District records are indexed....
Some of the problems you may encounter include: .........

I had already searched Inquests 1880-1942...no Josephine BAWDEN.  I have also searched other resources as well Coroner's Reports, Deaths in Mental Institutions...nothing.

Edit to remove some of the quoted info....
