BAWDEN South Australia
« on: Tuesday 14 September 10 05:08 BST (UK) »
This is the first topic I have initiated on Rootschat, and I have been searching unsuccessfully for the answers for years.

1.  I am seeking the arrival date (and name of ship) when my great-great-grandparents arrived in South Australia.  Henry and Josepha Bawden (nee Matthews) arrived in South Australia with two sons, John Hugh and Samuel, some time between the birth of Samuel in England in March 1855, and the birth of their first Australia child Mary Emma near Kapunda in December 1858.  I have searched many shipping records but to no avail!

2.  I am also seeking the date/place of death and burial place of my great-great-grandmother, Josepha Bawden.  The family lived near Moonta (her last child was born there in August 1868) and they later possibly moved to the Port Adelaide area.  Her husband Henry died in at Glanville in 1909, and I was told she had predeceased him, but this may not be so.  I have searched for her death under Bowden and also Joseph but can find nothing.

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks Gerry; I hadn't followed up those references in the SA Directories.  Maybe Josepha died at Wallaroo?

Yes, Indeed.  It might help to paint a picture of the movements of family members.  Were there any directories in the 1890's and early 1900's?

Thanks again,

John

John,

You probably have these marriage details, it maybe your Henry & Josepha.

Free UK BMD Records

Marriage in Jun 1852 Henry Bawden District of Liskead Vol 5c Page 109

Marriage in Jun 1852 Josepha Matthews District of Liskead Vol 5c Page 109

District of Liskead is in Cornwall.

Thanks again, Gerry, but I do have this record, and have largely tracked the Matthews and Bawdens through the UK census records etc.

It is once they land in Australia that things get difficult!
