Hi

I am researching the 'Margetson' family from Gt Ellingham and have come to a dead end. I would love to hear from anyone who is researching this family.

Hi

The difficulty I am having is explained below:

My gt gt grandfather was Ernest Margetson born to Susannah Margetson Rockland Workhouse 3/11 1890 bap 4/12 1890. This info was recorded by a researcher I employed from the workhouse registers.

Susannah's sister Sarah Ann Margetson also had a son Ernest Margetson  Rockland Workhouse 16/12 1890 bap 12/2 1890. This info was also recorded by the researcher. I also have Ernest's birth certificate stating his mother as Sarah Ann. I also have his death certificate date of death 12/2 1891.

All seems quite simple so far two children born to two  sisters.
But why would two sisters give their children the same name?

I have searched all the birth indexes that I can think of but I cannot find Susannah's sons birth entry. There is only one listed in Q1 1891 and this is Sarah Ann's.

Also I cannot trace a Ernest Margetson in the 1891 census. Susannah is recorded as being with her daughter Edith and employer Julia Hart.

In 1892 Susannah marries Robert Semmence and by 1901 Ernest is recorded as a Semmence.

Ernest is also missing from the 1911 census.

On Ernest's death certificate his date of birth is recorded as 3/11 1891.

Hope you can assist. I have a feeling that only parish registers may be able to help. What do you think?

Hi Sadie,

You're in luck.  Both these baptisms are on the Family search pilot site.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#w=0&p=waypoint&s=waypointsOnly&c=fs%3A1416598

Scroll down to Rockland St Peter, baptisms 1813-1906, and they're both on page 47 (of 53)

Hi

Thankyou so much for this reference. This has helped me eliminate a brick wall I have had for ages. The website is extremely useful and one that I have not heard of before.

Once again thankyou.

Hi Brian

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

According to her profile, Sadie hasn't been online here since June 2015 but as long as her email address hasn't changed she should receive an email notification that you have posted and hopefully come back soon.

HI,

Welcome to RootsChat

At the bottom of each RootsChat page under "Your Tools" you will see a sub heading "Surname Interests Table" - this is where you can add your own surname and interests.  At a quick glance there are 2 "Chatters" who have listed Margetson - might be worth having a look.
