Hi Kris

Sources for SA Shipping records/Emigrant Register 1836-1842 have
Embarkation No 3511 for Duncan, occupation shepherd, age 30. (not 3522)
Elizabeth was a dairymaid age 23. Her Emb. No 3509 is almost next to Duncan's!!

Glad you got the entry Essie, I have only seen the index - you are right with the number finger must have hit the 2 instead of the one.  :-[

So he was a 30 year old shepherd. Wonder if there is a marriage in Scotland which will help work out who he is.

Cheers Kris  :)

Thank you  all for the info, Keep it coming.
We have two Duncan McFarlane’s
one arriving on the Parland 1824
one arriving on the India 1840
Duncan’s  brother James didn’t marry

Duncan did marry in Scotland – he married Agnes McNee – but it states Agnes Mcfarlane she died 1837.
They had one child – Agnes she marries Nicol Fletcher Brown
The arrive after the death of Duncan as they receive most of the will along with nephew’s of Duncan. They return to Scotland – he was a noted Surgeon.
There was three churches at the time – church of Scotland, free church – Presbyterian and United church.
I tried to find these churches – the Mortlock library holds the records re trying with them.
The birth of the chn (4) appear to be not register either.
The most interesting thing     to turn up is –the purchase of land by Duncan Lennox McFarlane, who marries in NZ 1875. it states that he had lived in NZ 66yrs at time of death –arrive in NZ 1862.
I have been unable to confirm  his arrival in NZ.
There is a article        - history of the McFarlane’s in Victoria & South Aust, given by D MacFarlane Clan MacFarlane – the story of Gippsland by Charles Davey chapter 2 page 5. In this article it states that “I haven’t come across any other Duncan or James in SA, Vic, or NSW whose birth & death fit the pattern”.  The spelling has changed from Mac to Mc.
Lachlan McFarlane appears to be a cousin father Thomas – but Thomas is not a brother to Duncan.  :)

No sign of marriage or births of other chn
We have a reply from SLSA re the birth of Duncan to Duncan and Elizabeth that has been confirmed.

There might be a problem with the Morphett Vale Presbyterian Church, as per this from the SLSA ( this is were the birth of duncan's records are)

Information on the Presbyterian Church is in the Observer,
20 January 1844;
Register,
2 June 1855, page 3c;
its destruction by fire is reported on
13 February 1858, page 4g,
Observer,
21 April 1906, page 41e

Wthat about census? :)

However in the Presbyterian baptismal register of St. Andrews Church, Wakefield Street, Adelaide (1842 - 1873) (SRG 123/29) I did find the following:

"McFarlane - Duncan Lennox McFarlane, son of Duncan McFarlane, Morphett Vale and Elizabeth Norris his spouse, born 10 Dec. 1842, bap. 22 Oct. 1843."   :)

Heath you may not have read the links on my reply as I now notice that the link to the census search page has a notice The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.  The first link is still working and that has all the information you need about census and location of records.

There are very few surviving census in Australia.  The 1841 census is the only one in South Australia for which any detailed records survive.  If you search the link and find a entry and would like more information you need to contact the author of the website.  There is a fee for the information.

Cheers
Cando

Added later.  Kris has already searched the 1841 census for you ;)
