I  hadn't considered them marrying before 1910,silly really,i will check that marriage,i'm not sure about 1911 census,i'm subscribed to a couple of  sites,so will have a look,thankyou.

There are several instances of James Thomas and Sarah Thomas on the same page of marriages in Neath which makes things quite difficult from your respect.
Did Sarah give a middle name on Williams birth cert.? (or James?)
James may have been a collier when William was born but he may not have been previously people did change their occupations.
Can you ask someone if William had siblings? An older relative perhaps.
