Thankyou vabbott and cobbs , now I at least know that the shop name mentioned within the family is correct .
Does anyone know how many shops there were and where they were sited ? Was the High St . Colchester correct ? Does anyone know what is there at that site now ?
Live in North West and not been to the south east for many years .

According to the telephone books the address is......7 St Botolphs Street Colchester. I think there may have been one in Witham which about 10-12 miles west of Colchester.

Revisiting my post from about 12 years ago in a quest to find any possible further local info . on a chain of small shops named Modes and owners Ronald ( Ronnie ) and Pearl George .
Ronnie was a local footballer for a short time at Colchester Utd before moving on to Sudbury Town .
Family info . has said the shops were generally small in size ( local high street shops of the day 1950 - 60s ) and sold fashion wear .
They are known to have lived in the area for approx . 35 - 40 years having moved from Bristol to South London for a short time ( he played for Crystal Palace ) , before setting up home in the Colchester area .
Are there person directories for who lived in the town / area in a library  ? as sadly those that had the info . for Ronnie and Pearl are now gone .
Someone may now know or remember the shops , addresses or Ronnie and Pearl themselves .

Ronnie George b . Bristol 1922 d .1989 played football for Crystal Palace in the late 40s and early 50s . He also played a few games for Colchester and lived in the immediate area . He mrd . Pearl ( Bull ? ) Mar 1/4 1947 within the district of Sodbury ( outskirts of Bristol ) . Believed they had one child Gordon who has died since himself .
Anyone have any information on Ronnie and Pearl to aid my recent treeline  ?

From this original post , Ronnie and Pearl George's son named Gordon died in 1983 and bur . in Bury St . Edmunds . He mrd . in 1971 Lois Bye and they had a son Richard ( so it seems ) c . 1975...who pos . still lives in the area .
