A Dilton Marsh GEORGE

James George shown on various census info . as b . Dilton Marsh .
Father is shown as James a sailor on his mrg . certificate ( 2nd mrg . 1850 ) and as deceased .
Would it be strange to have found a sailor as far inland , although may have been visiting  ?
Who was James mother , prob . from the area  ?
Perhaps the family were from Frome , Westbury  ?
James George ( son ) known post 1850 to have settled within the Avon Gorge at Bristol as a quarrier .
Looking at anything you may know and be able to share , as baffled me for a while .

known in 1887 at death to be living no.2 Rownham Hill , Hotwells

Dilton Marsh I believe has changed county at various times being on / close to the Wilts / Smst border .

He mrd . twice ( widower ) and I am unsure of anything to do with his first mrg when or where .
Known to have mrd . Mary Ann Davis ( nee Ablett ) 20 Oct 1850 at Westbury on Trym ( Bristol )

Having the death cert . of James George it shows he was 66 y at death
b . circa 1821 if this is a true date bearing in mind census ages in later years .

A look at the WFHS Dilton parish transcript shows no GEORGE or similar baptisms between 1794 - 1837.

Dilton parish burials show no James GEORGE between 1585-1837.

There is a contender marriage for James Snr - Sep 21 1815, James GEORGE bach otp marries Mary SWEETLAND spinster otp witnesses John CURRIER and Sarah SHEPPHERD. (Does the name SWEETLAND appear in any of your later records?)

Are there other parishes you think are worth looking at?

No , I have no known connection with the surname SWEETLAND from research .
Its something to spend a little time on though as have been looking for info in/from the area for a while .
Dilton Marsh continues to 'bug me ' with James George snr showing as a sailor though on James jnr . mrg . cert.
Not sure how many parishes are between D.M and Westbury ( which as I said is mentioned on census )which could be possible areas of birth ??
But scribing D.M on the official form as place of birth is very specific .

Got map,thanks for that . A decent map always puts things into more perspective .
Of note , when you e-mailed in the week I took time to look at surrounding place names and parishes and found some fantastic pages on North Bradley ( a next parish ) looking at your map to Dilton Marsh area .
There are many George surnames there alongwith Sweetland ( the name you mentioned ) . Without rushing ahead with the Sweetland name and coming up with incorrect info . it certainly is a thread to follow .

Westbury - No GEORGE baptisms at all after 1761.

Bratton - No GEORGE baps 1815-1822
