I wonder if Barker is a mis-transcribed Barber?

I have at least 5 surnames in my tree that suffer from mis-transcription or variation.....Pain/Paine/Payn/Payne.

the family use the name barker now. well the ones in oz do. one son thinks his dad filled out his immigration forms out wrong and darnt tell them incase they got kicked out, so they just used barker.but his mum thinks it was earlier than that  :) :)
