Another Cheshire Regiment question
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 15:53 BST (UK) »
Being a new person to this site, I now realize I shoudl have started a new topic question rather than added my question to another thread.  Anyway here it is:

I am wondering if anyone will know (or direct me where to find) the movements of the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment from October 1944 through into 1945.  My dad was a Signals HQ Co. despatch rider with 1st Battalion - his name was Albert Jones.  I find in family correspondence that he was at Plymouth (Plumer Barracks?) that October but his correspondence from there ceased that month.

He was later wounded in Europe (I think in Holland, shot while riding his motorbike), but am not sure when.  By the time he recovered he was demobilized and returned to Rock Ferry.

Thanks,

Allan

Hi Allan.

Welcome to the forum.

It might be worth checking the National Archives.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/quick_search.aspx?search_text=Search+the+archives&x=22&y=8

If you search using the keywords 'Cheshire Regiment War Diaries', and set the dates between 1939 and 1945, quite a few results turn up.

Thank you for the link - you are right, there is a lot of material to look through there when I Search for the Cheshires in the WWII period.

Thanks Phil,

That is very helpful, particularly knowing  that the battalion went back into Europe in April.

Allan, they joined the 11 Armoured soon after the liberation pf Belson, and then stayed with them until the end of the war.  The replaced the 8th Monmouthshire Regiment.  Have a look for a book called the Black Bull, by Peter Hardlecore, which covers the 11th Armoured Div in WW2

Thanks again, this is all very useful.  I find I can buy a copy from Abebooks, so more interesting reading!
