We believe John and Charles were born in Walthamstow (Would that have been regisered in West Ham?) but we only know their details from the 1911 census, when they lived at 41, Greenleaf Road.

Yes Walthamstow comes within West ham reg district

from 1/10/1935 Walthamstow regs were transferred to Essex South Western reg district

And just to make matters more confusing, Trenet's younger sister Flora married Edward's younger  brother Harry in 1896, so there is another family of McDermotts whose mother's maiden name is Garner!

Just realised - you said about reading Ronella's signature. Can you let me know where to find it? We don't have any example of her writing, though we do have a photograph of her as a young woman.
