can anyone help please
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 17:30 BST (UK) »
Hi !
I have a relative called Sarah Horrocks born 1938 in Clerkenwell. She is on the 1861 Census aged 22 as a housekeeper. Then on the 1871 Census aged 32 she is a proprietor of an ironworks which employed 1800 men and 350 women.
Is there a way of finding out the name of the ironwork factory she must of inherited.
regards colcal

Hi

Unforunately, it seems Sarah Horrocks is still the Housekeeper.

The occupation (for her employer) runs over from the box above into "hers".

I don't think she has inherited anything

She is still the housekeeper to the same person as in 1861 who was a telegraph engineer employing 85 men

If you look at the 1871 entry for him - the first line shows Telegraph engineer contractor AND -  the entry then continues on the next line re: proprietor of iron works etc

Sarah's occ is shown as housekeeper

Thank you everyone who answered my request.
I thought the information given to me by my uncle seemed a bit strange, as there was no hint of money passed down from that side of the family.
