Landles of Hawick
« on: Friday 24 September 10 14:09 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help,
I have a Andrew Landles born in Hawick 1854 who was the father of 7 children.
One son also named Andrew born 1877 fathered 6 children.
Trying to find a connection from the original Andrew to Landles in Hawick today.
Anyone got any research there that might help me?

No, but in 1982 when I was beginning to research my Hawick ancestors, I got a nice letter from Ian W. Landles of Orrock House, Stirches Road, Hawick, who was Hon. Sec. of the Hawick Archaeological Society -

Hopefully this gentleman or other members of his family will still be in Hawick and might be able to help you with the family-history.

Hi

Douglas Scott's 'A Hawick Word Book' (http://www.astro.ubc.ca/people/scott/book.pdf) has an extensive article on the Landles family past and present which should answer all your questions. Be patient while it downloads- it's a massive work of over 1200 pages, documenting almost everything and everyone that ever existed in Hawick and surrounding area.

Many thanks to both,

I have traced the present day Ian Landles back to Sarah Godfrey with this help and established the family connection between the Landles and the Godfrey's in Hawick.
I have now managed to go back to 1759.

Again the help is much appreciated.

Funnily enough there is a death notice in today's Scotsman for an Andrew Landles who lived in Barnton, the same area of Edinburgh that I live in myself. I'm afraid I didn't know him. The letters after his name in the notice indicate that he was an architect.
