thank you carole and Mort29 for the info.  Can I just ask on is miltary papers does happen to say were his was born as I have not found his birth recorder anywhere

I think it said Woolwich or Greenwich, can certainly see County is Kent - but despite searching on just forenames (and reversing them) I couldnt see a likely entry - He enlisted in the Royal Artillery, 9th Brigade on 9/11/1885 in Inverness (altho elsewhere, Newcastle on Tyne is mentioned), and transferred to the 36th Brigade of R. Field Artillery  - kept the same serial number of 51535
