Had a look at Cowhorn Hill on Streetview. At the bottom of the hill, on the right looking down, is a substantial house with a stone wall in front. There is a lane to the right of the house as you look at it. There looks to be an extension on the left hand side of the house. Next the house, lower down, is a terrace of modern houses.
Cannot understand why you can't locate that section of the road via Streetview?

1938 Map (published 1945)  https://maps.nls.uk/view/101454666

Looking at the bottom of Cowhorn Hill there is only one property - adjoining the lane with plenty of land around it. The 1953 advert refers to "Garden and orchard, in all about 1 acre".
"California Colliery" is to the west.

No the house you mention on the right as you go down the hill ( via Streetview ) is not the house . Quite a few years ago I thought it was and did a little work as it was on a local sell site with pics . As I said , I met up with an older member of the family , sadly no longer with us , who lived at California House and who said that it had been demolished at some stage in the 70s .
The lane you mention which I remember being a public right of way , leads up towards Pennine Rd and through to the Crown and Horseshoe pub ( mentioned in the aforementioned article ref . sell of California House ) .
The streetview is available to me but when I try to obtain an image it is not of the quality I require .

It seems surprisingly because its outside the immediate Bristol area , The Bristol Archives have some images available there which I have enquired about..whether they are the ones I want..who knows but fingers crossed .
Any help in the meantime would still very much be appreciated ..

Dear Double Trouble
I run a Facebook group called Hanham, Longwell Green, Oldland and Bitton memories. There is currently a discussion on there about the location of the Collier’s Arms , so these posts are very helpful. We would love you to join the group if you have photos of the area you are willing to share, and we will possibly have references to surnames in your tree if they lived locally.  I expect one of our members would photograph the area you refer to if asked. Also the chicken tumps/dumps mentioned earlier was an area of ground on California Road, opposite the junction of Orchard Boulevard, to left of lane that cuts through to St.Anne’s  by old water works building. In 1940s, 50s, 60s chickens were kept on the old slag heaps from California Colliery. Jmj9
