Harris - Sheffield
« on: Sunday 26 September 10 20:29 BST (UK) »
My gt gt grandfather William Henry Harris was born in Sheffield on 28 May 1831, the son of an Edward Harris.

William joined the Royal Navy and served on HMS Cambridge before joining the coastguard service where was posted to Ireland.  He married Anne Bowen in Clontarf, North of Dublin, on 13 August 1857 and died on 31 October 1891, also in Clontarf.

I would appreciate any ideas on how to obtain further information on this Harris family from Sheffield.

Hello Ginger,

I have no further information on Edward Harris' occupation, nor do I know if William had any siblings.

Would a birth certificate give Edward's occupation and where could I obtain one from ?

If you go to www.sheffieldfhs.org.uk  you will see that they have some of the Sheffield area cemeteries on-line. A search for HARRIS .. turned up 177 graves listed.
One was .... HARRIS Edward .. died at Heavergate Rd; buried on May 31, 1899 in Roman Catholic ground; Grave Number 125, Section A of St Michaels RC Cemetery, Rivelin (St Bridget's section).
While this may .. or may not be your Edward .. the sheffield fhs site is a good place to go.
William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

Ken S,

Thank you for your message. I have already been in touch with SheffieldFHS.

The date of death would seem about right, although I had assumed that Edward and his son William were both Anglican ... I could be wrong.

Thank you for your help.
