Northallerton - Local knowledge required
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 16:50 BST (UK) »
My Grandmother was born at Melbourne Yard, Northallerton.  Does anyone know where this is?  I've googled it but not been able to find out where it is.  I'm also looking to find out where the boarding/lodging house on Main Street, Northallerton was.  Can anyone help?

Thanks
Erica

I think they were living in Melbourne Yard from around 1905.  My Grandmother was born 1914.  I think it might have been some kind of farm.   The boarding/lodging house was from about 1850 to early 1900s I think.  Do you know if there is a local family history society that might be ale to help?

Lodging house on: Mary Thompson b.abt 1886 Northallerton (1851 census).  James Castles b.1885 Northallerton (1891 Census).  James Castle b.1885 Northallerton (1901 Census).  Melbourne Yard on: James Castle b.1885 Northallerton (WW1 Service Records).  James Castle on the 1911 census.  Also on my Grandmothers birth certificate which I don't have a copy of at present.

 :)

Will have a look at that link.  Thanks Andrea.

ok from what i can gather if you looked on google earth now you will see quaker lane on the right hand side of the high street as you head north towards darlington, from the roundabout at the top of the high street to the railway line is north end, its around the area of the church ok.

the bit that you want is up from quaker lane towards the railway line, on the quaker side i think, its where there is a big b&q now

Ahh thankyou.  Just looking at it now.  Is the bbq area where the lodging house was or where Melbourne Yard was?  I'll definately give the library a try, and also the record office.  I'm probably going to visit Northallerton as my Great Grandad, James Castle, is on the War memorial at the church and I'd like some photos.

Thanks for your help  ;D
