Courtesy Free BMD.

William Cater married either Elizabeth Thomas or Elizabeth Trew in the March 1864 quarter in the Shoredith district. Ref. 1c 279.

I can't find them on the 1871 census at this time either.  Anna

They were married 29th February 1864 at St. James Church, Shoreditch.

William Cater was of Full age and a 'waiter' and his father was William Cater a 'silk weaver'.  Elizabeth THOMAS father was John Thomas a 'cab proprietor'.  They were both living at 4, New North Street.  (I assume Shoreditch.)

There is a William Cate of the right age living with his mother Eliza Cate at St Saviour Southwark in 1871 :-\

check freebmd to look for births.
I found Annie Cater born 1880 (April-June Quarter) which would match 11 months at census

Thanks for your replies.  There's another "twist" in the tale.  We have one of the birth certificates for the children - Eliza, born 1874.  It says that the mother was Elizabeth Cater LATE James FORMERLY GOODING.
Can't find a marriage between Elizabeth James and William Cater.  Have found a marriage between Elizabeth Gooding and Charles James - in the Norwich area.  Have been trying to find baptisms of the children listed on the 1881, but can't find a thing.  Any list of non-conformist baptisms anywhere?

I found the marriage that you found. There is also a couple of deaths in Norfolk for Charles James.  Unfortunately this is  not an unusual name, so may or may not be connected.  Anna

This marriage in Norfolk:  Elizabeth Gooding would only have been 13!  I know that the marriage age was lower then, but even so 13 is very young.  So I have my doubts.  She was born in London, and perhaps was working for a family in Norfolk; but somehow I don't think that this is her.  Anna
