1885 Duke of Sutherland Brisbane Passenger
« on: Tuesday 28 September 10 23:30 BST (UK) »
Hope someone can assist old guy here in Midwest US with my search for information on Annie Martha Housden who arrived Brisbane 18 October 1885 on board Duke of Sutherland from Canterbury, England. Are passenger manifests available.  Are electronic images available?  How may they be obtained?

Wasn't Duke of Sutherland the author Joseph Conrad's ship?

Thanks a real newbie here

HOUSDEN Anne M single age 25yrs - Duke of Sutherland 18 Oct 1885
REF: IMM/120 352 Z1962 M1701

She arrived with possibly her brother?

HOUSDEN M J (Mr) age 22yrs  - Duke of Sutherland 18 Oct 1885
REF: IMM/120 352 Z1962 M1701

You can order copies of the passenger list from the QLD State Archives but the isn't much information on them - surname, given name, age, married or single & children.

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/forms_templates/IndexOrderForm.pdf

The cost for each ship requested is $12.50. For this fee you will receive a copy of the entire passenger list.
Quote the Name of the Ship and date of voyage, Location, page number and microfilm number.

Hi kentryann,

Not sure how much information you have about ANNIE MARTHA, but thought I would offer these details.

She married in Queensland
In 1886 REG /B10914 Housden Annie Martha to Ryan    Edward Thomas

There were a number of children. You can search here

https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/BirIndexQry.m

One of them, CYRIL HOUSDEN RYAN has a digitised ww1 military record.  He was awarded the Military Cross

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

ANNIE died in NSW

REG 326 In 1953 RYAN  ANNIE MARTHA  father WILLIAM HOUSDEN    Mother not listed   in   SYDNEY

The 1881 English census shows one ANNIE M. HOUSDEN as a domestic nurse aged 21 with a family in Beckenham KENT.  Is that possibly her?

Not much success so far with the possible brother, but I am tempted by this death entry in NSW

REG 15486 In 1952 HOUSDEN,  WILLIAM JOHN father   WILLIAM mother ANN at MARRICKVILLE

The initial M on the immigration record may actually have been W ;)

Hi
Lending weight to the theory that Mr  M J HOUSDEN on the immigration index may have been the  WILLIAM JOHN HOUSDEN on the NSW death index.

From  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

A couple named WILLIAM and ANN HOUSDEN formerly HOLMAN (married 1858)  seem to have had a number of  children in CATERBURY  including -

 ANNIE MARTHA HOUSDEN, Canterbury Mar ¼ 1860  2a 576
It appears many of these children died young.

One possible birth is
WILLIAM JOHN HOUSDEN, Canterbury, Sep 1/4 1863. 2a 581

Birth date is correct for the arrival age of Mr M J

WILLIAM JOHN HOUSDEN  aged 17 appears to be with his widowed mother, ANN, on 1881 English census.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp

Some of the names given to other children of WILLIAM and ANN HOUSDEN  seem to be repeated in the naming of ANNIE MARTHA RYAN's own children, again supporting the idea of she and WILLIAM JOHN being siblings

Merlin, Sparrett,

Thanks.  Did not know about a brother but certainly possible as a 25 year old young lady probably would want a travel companion for months long voyage to AUS.

The marriage you note to Edward Thomas Ryan confirms this Annie Housden to be my great grand mother.  I had only the name Ann H and a reference to my grand dad's mother's place of birth - Canterbury, England - from a 1910 US Census to go on. Where would I obtain AUS marriage record?

Sparrett -

Thanks, I have had NO information on AMH in England at all.  In addition to above, all I really knew was year of birth - about 1860.  And possible that AMH father was a innkeeper. Please, what do the 1/4 indicate in birth dates?

On a lighter note, I do believe that Duke of Sutherland was indeed Joseph Conrad's ship.

Kentryan55,

As Sue is off line at the moment I will step in here to tell you that "Sept 1/4" is the "September Quarter". The year is divided into four quarters with the Sept 1/4 being July/August/September, so the birth was registered in one of those months.

Each Australian State has their own BMD records. If you are interested in the Queensland marriage, you can obtain it via this site:
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/justice-services/births-deaths-and-marriages/family-history-research/historical-certificates
It's very low tech, expensive and takes forever, so I hope you're not in too much of a hurry.  ;D (However it will tell you Annie's father's occupation)

In my opinion it would not be worth you going to the time, expense and effort to obtain a copy of the ship's passenger list. As Merlin said, you will get very little further information. It may tell you their religion, perhaps an occupation, perhaps where they came from and perhaps if they were able to read and write. At the very least you may just get their names (details can vary).

If you wish, I can go to the Archives and take a copy of the relevant page for you.

Australian Death Certificates give a lot of information, including number of children, parent's names (if known by the informant), time in the particular State, so keep this in mind when deciding which certificates to purchase. Others will be able to provide further details but you can use a transcription agent (but not in Qld) who is able to simply copy the details from the certificate which is a lot cheaper than purchasing the full certificate. I note that Annie's death reg does not name her mother so her d/c won't either. In this case you may be wise to purchase the marriage cert instead of, or in additon to, the d/c if you wish.

PS. I forgot to welcome you to rootschat!  ;D

In Cyril Ryan's WW1 records his father is identified as a schoolteacher at Freshwater Cairns  Queensland.

A Queensland teachers index 1907-1920 has the following for Edward Thomas Ryan

Feb 1908 transfer from Camp Flat to Wallangarra, standing HT lll 2
Jan 1910 promotion lll 2 to lll 1
July 1911 transfer from Wallangarra to Cardwell HT lll 1
July 1914 transfer from Cardwell to Freshwater HT lll 1
Dec 1917 reclassification
July 1918 transfer from Freshwater to St Lawrence HT lll 1

On the Queensland site  http://www.archives.qld.gov.au  there is an index of teacher 1860-1904 and a Edward Thomas Ryan name is in the index, you can obtain the details for a fee.

Knowing that Edward Thomas Ryan was a schoolteacher here is some information from the Electoral Rolls.

Edward Thomas Ryan

1895 Electoral Roll District of Lockyer Gatton Division
Ryan Edward Thomas, Upper Tent Hill, schoolteacher, age 35

1900 Electoral Roll District of Lockyer Gatton Division
Ryan Edward Thomas, Upper Tent Hill, schoolmaster, age 35

1910 Electoral Roll District of Carnarvon, Stanthorpe Division
Ryan edward Thomas, Wallangarra, schoolteacher

1913 Electoral Roll Division of Herbert, Subdivision of Cardwell
Ryan Edward Thomas, Cardwell, teacher

1922 Electoral Roll Division of Capricornia, Subdivision of St Lawrence
Ryan Edward Thomas, State School St Lawrence, school teacher

1934 Electoral Roll Division of Capricornia, Subdivision of Fitzroy
Ryan Edward Thomas,  149 Stanley St
(probably Rockhampton also no occupation maybe retired)

Annie Ryan

1910 Electoral Roll District of Carnarvon, Stanthorpe Division
Ryan Annie, Wallangarra, housewife

1922 Electoral Roll Division of Capricornia, Subdivision of St Lawrence
Ryan Annie Martha, State School St Lawrence, home duties

1934 Electoral Roll Division of Capricornia, Subdivision of Fitzroy
Ryan Annie Martha, 149 Stanley St, home duties
(probably Rockhampton)

Hi
As ANNIE died in 1953 in NSW, I wonder if she is on any Rolls in that state  after the last entry QLD of 1934.

I think your decision to consider the purchase of certificates is sensible.

I agree with Ruskie that both the Qld marriage to RYAN and her NSW death will be of great value to you and will verify  (or not)all the research.
This link will tell you about transcription agents in NSW.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToTraceYouFamTree.htm#TranscriptionAgent

This is what you can hope to find on each state's BMD certifcates

http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html

Sue
ADDING Which of ANNIE's sons was your grandfather? {If you will not mind my curiosity ;D}
