I have seen Bernard John Ryan's birthplace listed on at least one early record as Bundamba, Queensland which is I believe a suburb of Ipswich. Is that correct?

I have also seen his birthplace listed as Brisbane.  I think Bundamba is correct. Knowing him as did, I believe he probably tired of trying to explain the where of and spelling of Bundamba to Americans, so he picked Brisbane which even an American could locate easily on a map. Or it is just possible that the change was made by a US immigration official who like to Americanize everything, especially names of other than English origin.

Is there any way to track where and on what ship he left Australia?

As his birth registration doesn't have a 'B' in front of it means that he wasn't born in Brisbane or it's suburbs.

Bundamba is about 7klm's from Ipswich itself.

The reference to  Wallangarra, QLD, AUS on the manifest is because that was his last place of residence where he was obviously living at the time with his parents.

Do you have any idea why he went to the USA, was he working for a company or such that would take him there?

Did he ever return to AUS to visit his family that you know of?

Sue,

I believe that post relates only the record for BJR trip from Southhampton, England to US.

My question is how did he get from Australia to England.

Yes, the Ellis Is record only proves his immigration entry into the USA & the ship he left the UK on.

You would need to check the passengers entering the UK on the passenger manifests for his arrival there before he left from Southampton to the USA.

Mmm.. Yes, I see what you mean.

I assumed, mistakenly probably,  as his last place of residence was Australia that the ship he was on (Oceanic) was the ship he started his voyage on.

If you have access to ANCESTRY they have his passenger record of arrival in the UK.

Bernard J Ryan is listed under the UK Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1960.

This will give you the ship he sailed on to the UK & any other details available  :)

Could still possibly be the Oceanic if she sailed into AUS waters.

There will be those who have expert knowledge on immigration matters.
But I do know that I have in my family story a group who went from US to England for a visit.

Even though their stay was short, their place of last residence on their return entry documents to US, shows an address in London.

This makes me wonder why it is not the case for your man if he did indeed stop, visit and change ships

I wonder what the definition of RESIDENCE was?
