It appears that William John HOUSDEN was married when he arrived in 1885 as I found a birth of a son to him & his wife in QLD that sent me looking for his marriage which I found in the UK  :)

Marriage:

HOUSDEN William John m. SMEED Elizabeth Louisa Sep Qtr 1885 Shoreditch Vol 1c/Page 282

Birth: (of the son in QLD)

HOUSDEN: William Henry b. 23/7/1886 #B037011
Father: William John HOUSDEN
Mother: Elizabeth Louisa SMEED

Then they must have travelled to NSW as there are another five children born to them in NSW which you can look up their births, marriages & deaths here:

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi

His wife Elizabeth's death:

HOUSDEN  Elizabeth L   d. 1910 BALMAIN SOUTH  #8420
Father: Harry

Wasn't Duke of Sutherland the author Joseph Conrad's ship?

On a lighter note, I do believe that Duke of Sutherland was indeed Joseph Conrad's ship.

Joseph Conrad (Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski) Mariner & Novelist

I can't see him as a mariner, crew or passenger onboard the Duke of Sutherland in 1885.

The Master of the ship was Captain James Duff, surgeon was Dr Hickling, the matron was Miss Cooksley & 331 Immigrants.

Annie & Edward's marriage date:

HOUSDEN Annie Martha m. RYAN Edward Thomas 18/9/1886 #B010914

The B means they married in Brisbane.
The names and dates is all you need to order the marriage certificate from the Qld Justice link I provided above. (so not the amount of numbers etc that is required for ordering UK certificates  ;))

To All:

Thank you for your assistance.  I have gained a great deal of information in a very short period of time owing to your informative responses.

Based on your collective advise, I have decided to obtain Annie Housden and Edward Ryan wedding record and also to use transcription agents to track down death records for Annie Housden and William Housden. My curiosity has been raised by their arrival on same ship.  After all this I hope to firm up Annie Housden's parent names.

Thanks again from an Irish English German Australian American.

Merlin,

You are correct.

According to an article posted at:
http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/ConNarrative.94/chapterId/2624/Joseph-Conrad.html

Looks like Conrad spent only one year 1878 on the Duke of Sutherland.

Merlin & Sue,

My grandfather was Bernard John Ryan who immigrated to US in 1910.  Arrived here on Oceanic from Southhampton, England.  I don't know whether he emigrated from Australia on same ship but I think that is possible since Oceanic also had a run to Sydney.  I suppose that the run from Sydney to England was to the West through Suez Canal which opened in 1869 and then to Southampton.  Any shipping records for those leaving Australia.
