Douglas family disappears-Lookup request
« on: Wednesday 29 September 10 23:00 BST (UK) »
I've got stuck tracing some of the Douglas family. They simply disappear between the 1901 & 1911 census.

There doesn't seem to be any trace of them in the 1911 census, they just vanish, all except for Caroline who living with her uncle, George Bailey & his family at 7 North Rd. Islington.

Here's what I have.

William Henry Douglas born 2nd May 1869

Marries Jane Charlotte Bailey, aged 21 in the Parish of St. Thomas, Islington on 28th November 1891.

Their children are

Caroline Emma Douglas, born 13th June 1892 St Mary, Islington.

She married Alfred Clarence Hoare, 25th Dec 1915 and Died 13th Feb 1921 in Bombay, India.

Note that she is in India with her husband. He is the informant on the death record. We have nothing to suggest that the Bailey family moved to India, or anywhere else. They disappeared before the 1911 census and the marriage is afterward.

The other children were.

William Alfred Douglas, born 14th July 1894. He isn't living with the family on the 1901 census. There is a record of a death for Alfred William aged one, that could be a fit with the forenames reversed.
Alfred James Douglas was born 5th July 1897 and baptised on 25th July 1897 in the parish of St. Mary Islington.
George Bailey is shown as aged 11 months on the 1901 census, but I can't find a birth record.
Thank you for any help. If you can shed any light on this, and especially if you are related any of them, please get in touch.

There is the following marriage at St Thomas, Barnsbury on 19 May 1918:

William Henry Douglas, age 48, widower, carman, 26 Bemerton Street, father - William Henry Douglas, watchman and
Elizabeth Rhoda Bishop, age 43, widow, 26 Bemerton Street, father - Charles Watts (deceased), gas stoker.
By banns. Witnesses - (William?) Douglas and Harriett Elizabeth Watts.

Not certain that this is the same William Henry Douglas. However, the age is correct and he is indicated as being a widower. Also can't find another birth around 1869 which might be relevant.

Jane Charlotte gave her address as 165 Bemerton Street when she married William Henry Douglas in 1891.

Thank you so much. There are just too many coincidences for this not to be the right one.

Every detail matches.

His wife and 3 out of 4 children died. I feel sorry for him.
