« on: Thursday 30 September 10 23:41 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor,William Chambers who went to trial at the Lincoln(part of Lindsay) Assizes on March 4,1820.Does anyone have access to the trial details or the Lincoln Mercury newspaper which may have mentioned it?I think that his father was Thomas Chambers.Does anyone have details of this family?William was born in 1798 and was transported to Australia.

Although his crime was at Carlton, apparently his abode was about 20 miles away from there http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/convictsdetails.asp?id=3579 but yes, it looks as if he could have been from Carlton (from IGI).

Hi Linda,
He was Conivicted of Cattle Stealing in the Lent Assizes 1820 and Sentenced to Death.
Australian Transportation Registers has;
Conviction Date 04 March 1820
Transported for Life October 1820
(Source Ancestry)

As Geoff E has found;
Christenings to THOMAS Chambers and ANN at Carlton Le Moorland, Lincoln
WILLIAM Chambers, 14 February 1798
JANE Chambers, 02 November 1800
ANN Chambers, 17 May 1807

Possible Marriage;
Thomas CHAMBERS
Ann COLLY, 05 December 1797, Carlton Le Moorland, Lincoln
(Source IGI at Familysearch, all Extracted Records)

Now someone has William on English Censuses but seem to have him mixed up with the one born c 1796, Donnington on Bain, Lincs to a Thomas/Ann also.
They are  not directly related to him though but to Jane.
(FamilyTree Ancestry)

Jane CHAMBERS married John TOWNSEND, 21 November 1821, Holbeach, Lincs

Trish :)

To Geoff E. and Trish,
Thanks for your help.You probably saw that there were two other William Chambers Christened in 1798 in Castle Bytham and Gainsborough so I am not sure if I have the right one.He may have been born in Langar but there is no Christening in that county for a William Chambers in that year on I.G.I.
Geoff,how did you find that he was convicted of Cattle stealing?.Do you have details of a later trial which commuted his sentence to Transportation?.When he was in Australia as a Convict he was a Herdsman so he had some previous experience with cattle.

Sorry Trish I just saw Geoff's name underneath and attributed the finding of Williams sentence to him.Does Ancestry give any other details re the case or where they sourced the records?.

No worries Linda :)

Unfortunately no other details;
Handwritten Entry in Book, County of Lincoln;
NAME, William Chambers
WHEN TRIED, 1820 Lent Assises
CRIME, Cattle Stealing
SENTENCE, Death

Is there no extra info on his Australian Marriage or Death Certs?

Trish :)

To Trish,
Thanks for your help.I am not an Ancestry member at present and the Library Ancestry package does not include everything.My problem with William Chambers is that we don't know for sure if he is our antecedent's(Eliza Chambers) father.She was a half cast Australian Aboriginal born in the 1830's with no baptism found.There were few white people in the area,Limestone Plains(now Queanbeyan)then mainly convicts,the military and a few pastoralists.The only Chambers anyone can find is this convict.It is possible that they just gave this generation made up surnames as her mothers full blood generation just had first names given to them by the English.I am just trying to find out more about William in case I am dna matched with a descendant of his extended family.We can't find a marriage for Eliza although she gives a date of marriage on all her children's birth certs.It is possible that it was not officially recorded because she was part Aboriginal.She could write so she did have some education so she probably knew about dates and place names.As for her possible father no marriage or death can be found as we don't know where he went after serving his commuted sentence.   Linda
