I've tried Lather, Lother, Lotter and L* but nothing.  :(

Think I'll have to give up for the night and let someone else have a go.

I might have found something thought I'd get it down so we can then disprove it ;D ;D

BROOKER, Charles Head Married  M 52 1839 Bricklayer  Guildford Surrey
BROOKET, Harriett Wife Married  F 60 1831 Laundress   Canada North America

The ages fit as does his job although he is listed as unemployed but name and place of birth are completely different.  Could they have been incognito ;) ::)

I've had another look and still nothing.

Charles Luther appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with his parents (father Charles, bricklayer) in Wiltshire aged 3 and 13.

In 1861 he is a bricklayer age 23, married to Ellen living in Shrewsbury.

In 1871 he is a bricklayer aged 33, married to Ellen living in Mile End London.

In 1881 he is a bricklayer aged 43, married to Harriet living in Shoreditch.

After that there is no trace in censuses or any deaths that fit.

Harriet's son Frederick is in the 1871 and 1881 censuses and then vanishes with again no death as far as I can see. I've also search for him as Frederick Luther.

Same with Harriet herself. There are 3 deaths of a Harriet Luther between 1881 and 1935 - one aged 57 in Hereford in 1891, one aged 54 in Eastbourne in 1899 and one aged 50 in E. Preston in 1934. The only possible is the first one, but as I said previously that was in the Sept quarter so she should appear in the 1891 census, which she doesn't.

The only explanation I can think of is that they did emigrate and that Frederick went with them.

Hi Trevor

I don't think any of the on line emigration records start before 1890 do they? We probably need some nearer 1881.

It's a real mystery  ??? ???
