Angela this item mentions 15 Catherine Street, Hoxton as I think this address was his residence and includes the occupation paper-hanger.  I think this address was either on the 1841 census or baptism of Richard Matthew.

Yes - I have just looked at it myself!  And now I understand why William and Catherine were living by themselves in Catherine Street in the 1851 census - it was obviously something to do with the business going bad I would suppose.

My goodness, this is just like Who Do You Think You Are? - with all these mysteries being uncovered!

I found a reference to a  HOWLING departing Sydney for Melbourne on the JAMES GIBSON  in Feb 1852 but cannot locate the ship's arrival in Melbourne.  The ship may been a coastal trader.  I spent quite some time searching the SHIPPING ARRIVALS in the Argus newspaper.

There is also an advertisement in the MISSING FRIENDS column of the Argus.
HOWLING Richard   4 Dec 1854.

This is a rather mysterious message from William Spinkle, in light of what is now known.  There was a William Spinkle around in Poplar - but now I can't find him!

I wonder if it is at the time that that Richard jnr jumped ship?

If this should meet the eye of Richard Howling of Polar, he will hear something his advantage by writing to William Spinkle, on board the ship Blackwell.

This possibly Richard Jnr the sailor in Vic and possibly arrived as ships crew.

sorry I haven't quite worked out how this quoting thingy works!  I think my brain is definitely in information overload!

But it is all very mysterious, with people being in debtors prisons and others going to prison for jumping ship.  I am so exited by it all.  ;D
