Vanstone family, St Helier
« on: Monday 04 October 10 09:30 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My G-G-G-Grandfather, Ascott James Vanstone, was (apparently!) born in Jersey in 1842.
His brother, Matthew John Vanstone, was born 1844, also in Jersey.
Father James Vanstone (b 1812), mother Mary Ann (b 1814) both from Devon. They were married in Devon in 1836.

To date I have found no records of either birth.

When I was recently in Jersey, with a couple of hours to spare before a flight, I did some searching at Societe Jersiaise I found the family in the 1841 census, mis-transcribed as Veanstone, living at Upper Don Street, with a Dorothy aged 3, and an Arscott (transcribed as Anscott) James aged 1.

When the family moved to Bath (by the 1851 census) neither child appears, although there is an Ascott James, aged 9.

So, the family were only in Jersey for a few years and, I suspect, that they were involved with the Bible Christians (Methodist) sect.

Can anybody find for me:
1) Baptism records for Ascott James or Matthew John?
2) Death records of either Dorothy or Arscott James?
3) Are there any records relating to the Bible Christians in St. Helier?

Many thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin

I can find some deaths but not the baptisms!

Dorothy Jane Vanstone, daughter of James and Mary, died 2nd Jul 1841 aged 3Y 9M.

Asket James Vanstone, son of John and Mary, died 13th Jul 1841 aged 1Y 5M.

Those details are taken from the St Helier Parish Church records.

However Vanstone is not a common name in Jersey and sticks out. So I also noted the following:

Samuel Henry Vanstone, born St Helier, volume 3, 14th Nov 1844 to 24th Dec 1845, page 64.

Samuel Henry Vanstone, died St Helier, Jun 1845 to Dec 1846, volume 3, page 9.

Mary Ann Vanstone, born St helier, May 1848 to Aug 1849, volume 5, page 25.

John Edwin Vanstone, born St Helier, Aug 1849 to Aug 1850, volume 6, page 84.

Thanks Stewart,

I have a list of Vanston(e) baptisms from another family (John Vanston(e) and Ann Bale/Bates) between 1848 and 1861.

Apparently all the children died young, and the mother was buried with them - haven't found the grave (or graveyard!) yet, but then again I am not exactly sure where this family fits into the Vanstone tree.

Arscott James Vanstone (1840) was baptised in the Bible Christian, Kilkhampton circuit - which is Cornwall, but the records show that the baptism actually took place in West Putford (Devon).

I strongly suspect that we may find the 2 baptisms in Jersey in non-conformist registers, but I couldn't locate them in my limited time at the Societe.

Thank you again for the deaths - that has been really helpful. ;-)

For the record, baptisms I found were:
Mary Ann Vanstone 10/9/1848
John Edwin Vanstone 23/9/1849
John Edwin Vanstone 25/5/1851
Henry James Vanstone 20/2/1853
William Henry Vanstone 22/4/1855
Susana Louisa Vanstone 20/9/1857
Elizabeth Ann Vanstone 30/1/1859
James Vanstone 4/8/1861
