Lookup Request - Sarah Ellen Sykes/Herbert Leo Hill

Hello

Can anyone help me with something please?. I am confused . Sarah Ellen Sykes born abt 1878 in Northampton, the Daughter of John Sykes & Mary Ann Witherby married Herbert Leo Hill in Northampton in Sep 1899 freeBMD Ref: 3b:192. They are resident in Far Cotton, Northamptonshire, England in the 1901 census.

Then I think have found him again in the 1911 census living at 12 Northcote St with Ellen and a Daughter Violet born in Fishponds, Gloucester who I can not find a record for her birth.  It gets confusing with the Wootton lot as the family name used Hill & Hills.

However I have found on ancestry a marriage of a Herbert Leo Hill to a Fanny Stocks in York, Ontario, Canada in 1908 with the record saying he is a Bachelor. The record gives the correct name of his Parents as Henry Hill & Mary Dunkley. 

Did he go to Ontario get married and then come back again and lived happily in Kingsthorpe or have I got my Herbert's mixed up somewhere?.

Do you mean you can't identify which one it is?  I think Fishponds would register in Bristol and there are several births in 1906-08 with names involving Violet and Hill(s).  Let me know if you need the details.

Hi Richard.

It looks like Herbert was telling porkies.

His father is noted as of Northampton.

There is no death on freebmd for Sarah, at least
I can not find one.

Do you know if there were any children of the marriage.

Hello All,

Thank you for your help. All those people on the Wootton census are the right people.

I wonder if he was telling porkies. I have found him again in my notes from the record office at the marriage of his Sister Ada Beatrice Hills to Harry Mobbs on 27 Nov 1910 in Wootton.   

Perhaps Leo went to Canada/America looking for work as well. anything is possible. I know that Sydney Granville Hill from Thirlestane Road emigrated to Minnesota to work on the railways and then his Mother followed. He married Martha Sykes but she was from a different Sykes family.

Hi Richard

There are several men called Herbert L Hill(s) in the censuses.  I think you have got 2 of them mixed up.   

The 1881 census that I quoted shows

Herbert L Hill (son of George & Mary) born in Northants abt 1875
George's sister in law (so probably his wife's sister) is shown as Sarah Dunckly
making Herbert's parents George Hill & Mary Dunckly/Dunkley

This is probably the one who married Sarah Ellen Sykes.

This ties up with the marriage of a Herbert Leo Hill to a Fanny Stocks in York, Ontario, Canada in 1908 that you found

These don't sound like the same man to me!!

I think you need to check the Hill(s) & Dunckly/Dunkley connections very carefully as well.
