Hello

If Eliza was born in Frodsham this may be her birth registration:

Eliza Ann Smith in 1872 (June quarter)
Runcorn volume 8a page 240

Frodsham was in Runcorn registration district.

The age is slightly wrong for her age at death but it is very close and the name matches so it is worth contacting the local register office to verify the details if you want to buy the certificate.

With a name like John Smith it is not going to be easy to trace ancestors so let's hope that Eliza's Mother had a more unusual surname! A birth certificate will provide Mother's name which help you to go further back, particularly if we can also trace John's marriage certificate.

modified - that is likely to be the correct birth record as Cheshirebmd site has it recorded at Frodsham. :)

Hello
Thank you for your reply, and you have confirmed my suspicions that the June quarter 1872 was her birth, so I'll invest £9.25 and take it from there.
There are age discrepancies, but I know that is nothing unusual:

1881 Census, two possible Eliza Ann's, both age 7, Runcorn and Frodsham
1890 27th January marriage certificate, age stated as 21
1891 Census, as Albert's wife, aged 20
1895 Death, March quarter, aged 24

I know what you mean about commonality in forenames and surnames, I'm currently looking at 18th century Smiths in Somerset, and my next task is Jones from Holywell and Flintshire - oh joy !!

Thank you again for your advice, I really appreciate your time and effort.
Kind regards
Philip

Hi Cathy,
My great grandmother was Eliza Ann Smith, and I have her marriage certificate to Albert Jenkins in 1890. Your Emily Smith may well be a relative, given the same John Smith as a father's name, and Frodsham location.
Thank you for that, and another avenue to explore.  I live in Devon, if there is anything I can do to help, with for your Devon research.
Many thanks,
Philip.

Hi, I've also been looking at Eliza and saw that she died just after Joseph her son was born. I've assumed this was related to childbirth? Does anyone know if this was the case?

Also the record I've found for Joseph's birth is part of a workhouse vaccination officers report. I was wondering if Eliza was there too when she died? Joseph appears on the 1911 census age 16 as a patient in Birkenhead. Does anyone know anymore? Thanks in advance.

Hi
Thanks for your interest and it appears that Eliza Ann died the same day as Joseph was baptised. Her death was rather tragic, so I've sent the details in a PM
Thanks,
Philip
