Two marriages - same people
« on: Friday 08 October 10 13:21 BST (UK) »
part of my research has shown that one ancester married the same man twice!I've got Sarah Eidmann marrying Walter John Cleave in 1871 and again in 1880, at different locations.  Anyone else come across similar?
Eidman, Eidmann, Eidmans - London, Cardiff, Somerset
Payne - London, Cardiff, Somerset
Scott - Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leith
Lawrence - Edinburgh, Leith
Oriel - Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Glamorganshire
Hobbs, Huggins - Gloucester
Hurlow, Protheroe - Pembrokeshire
McLeod, Dallison

If you're sure its the same couple I'd be suspicious.  It sounds as though they thought their 1871 marriage wasn't valid for some reason (perhaps a previous marriage for one of them?)
Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

I have a family member who got married without his Commanding Officers permission,  seems that made the marriage not legal :-\

Not sure why though :-\

Yes I've encountered a similar instance of two marriages for the same couple - but much closer in time (1880 and 1882)

Hi

When couples marry they can give incorrect information either deliberately or by mistake. There is then a worry that that incorrect information might invalidate the marriage (which is doesn't) and they marry again just in case. If you hold details of both marriages you will be able to tell whether the details match exactly. That seems more common than a second marriage when the first is legally invalid for some reason, simply because the partner marrying for instance bigamously is less likely to tell the other, or where both partners and family know they don't want to draw anyone else's attention to the fact the first was illegal, by having a subsequent later marriage which would also call into question the legitimacy of any children they have had.

I'm not sure marrying without your commanding officer's permission made a marriage legally invalid just not recognised by the army which would mean your wife and children could not travel with you etc.

Regards

Valda
