any Samuel Fletcher circa 1820 in Derbyshire
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 00:40 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a Samuel Fletcher or the baptism of his 2 children..........any clue would be gratefully received......

Samuel Fletcher married in Ashover, Derbyshire on the 23rd May 1837 to Elizabeth Wall, daughter of John Wall, (farmer - near Ashover).

As yet not seen the original entry so do not know if there are witnesses - although the marriage entry was given by the local record office.

1841 census; Sarah Fletcher 4 yrs living with John Wall, farmer and his family on his farm. No Samuel, Elizabeth/Eliza Fletcher, and I have searched every census entry for Ashover for any Flechers and 4 yr Sarah is the only one.

1851 census; Sarah Fletcher 13 yrs old birthplace Washington ( been told could be Wessington?), grand-daughter and farm servant...still with grandparents on the farm in Ashover.
1851 census; Eliza Longdon with husband Thomas Longdon with son William Longdon 10 yrs (a miner) born Ashover, there is a 4 year gap before another child Ann Longdon is born in Chesterfield.

1861 census; William is using the name William Longdon
1871 census; William is using the name of William Fletcher
1881 censu; William is using the name William Fletcher
1891 census; William is using the name of William Longdon
1901 census; William is using the name of William Longdon-Fletcher.

No baptism have been found for Sarah Fletcher circa 1837/8 or birth, nor for William Fletcher circa 1840, no re-marriage of Elizabeth Fletcher/Wall to Thomas Longdon, no death for Samuel Fletcher.
When William marries he gives his father as Samuel Fletcher.

I would be very grateful if anyone researching Fletcher has come across these names......

Thank you, Lee

Thank you Susan,

I will see if I can track backward with the Samuel you found, I always thought with not so many Samuels, I would find him easily.....

There are a lot of Samuel Fletchers born around 1820 in Derbyshire, but I found one who was baptized in Baslow,to William and Mary Fletcher.
Baslow is about 12 miles from Ashford,
There is also a baptism at North Wingfield (abt 6 miles)in 1826 extracted.and Shirrland (abt 5 miles)in 1825 submitted.
I have Fletchers born in Heanor (15 miles)but I am still trying to sort out those who belong from those who don't at least not in the last six generations.
Good luck in your endeavors.

Thank you Liz

I don't think the Samuel Fletcher I'm looking for, was from very far away, I will also look into the family at Baslow, when you say there is a baptism at North Wingfield in 1826 extracted and Shirrland 1825 submitted, does that mean the IGI?
When you don't live in the area it is much harder to be able to place villages etc, and have no idea of distance without looking for a map first.
Elizabeth/Eliza Wall was only about 16/17 at the time and it is a guess in thinking Samuel was about the same age.......Samuel Fletcher is a direct  line so it is important for me to follow all the leads I get, so thank you again.

Yes those baptisms were on IGI. When I want to find how close places are I just go to mapquest uk and fill in the place names,it's quick and it gives me some idea if the place is more likely.

Hi Lee

I'm related to Elizabeth/Eliza Wall & have been looking for the same details as you for ages, so have a quite a few other people actually.

The only thing I can add so far is that Eliza was in Wessington in 1841

1841 Wessington Crich
Joseph Brown 25 FWK
Mary Brown 20
Ann Brown 2
William Brown 9 MO
Elizabeth Fletcher 20 FWK

They are Joseph Brown & Mary Fletcher I've just looked up.

Brown Joseph   Wessington   Fletcher Mary   Wessington   15/08/1836   B.  G - FWK   Crich         Witnesses Samuel Colledge & Sarah Knowles, it looks like Samuel was most likely from Wessington.

Nothing like answering a message to concentrate the mind!

Cheers Jo
