transport from Sydney to Newcastle in 1876
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 04:05 BST (UK) »
My ancestors arrived in Sydney aboard 'Samuel Plimsoll' in 1876. They settled in Brookstown, Wallsend.

Can anyone tell me what mode of travel would have been used then to get them from Sydney to Wallsend.

regards

Highly likely a coastal vessel from Sydney to some point on the Hunter River then by horse driven transport.

And this one  suggests free rail passes for passengers ex that voyage for those to Yass and Browning ... so perhaps there were free rail passes for those who wanted to travel north to the Hunter ...

So if I were you, I'd be going through the newspapers, perhaps there's mention of your family by name.

Sydney & Newcastle were finally connected by rail in 1889 after the construction of the railway bridge across the Hawkesbury River.

They could have gone by land ... Kangaroo Pt ferry existed from c 1844 ... I think George Peat was the operator...

JM,

Yes a very good point, before this ferry one had to go via the Wiseman ferry if they wanted to go overland.
