1891 Census Help Please! Re: William and Isaac Cook.
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 18:36 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if someone could help me please.

I have been looking for two brothers born in Watton, Norfolk by the Names of William James (1869) and Isaac J Cook (1872).

They appear on the 1881 census with their family in Saham Toney.

But not on the 1891 census.  The obvious answer would be that they had passed away.  However, they both appear on the 1901 census.

William in Paddington, London living as a boarder and working as a porter.  And Isaac with his wife Kate in Oxfordshire working as a Letter press printer.

I have searched for them all over the country and can't think of anything as to why they wouldn't be on the census.... (there were no wars etc)

Any help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks

Terri x

Hi, Not sure if this is the William you are looking for but it does have links to what you have said.  In my experience the birth dates in the census can vary from actual dates a fair bit.

MCCARTHY, Michael Head Married M 34 1857 Wharf Labourer  Stratford Essex
MCCARTHY, Mary Ann Wife Married F 26 1865  Scotland
MCCARTHY, Albert Son Single M 2 1889  Stratford Essex
ROCKHARD, George Boarder Married M 27 1864 Railway Shunter  Great Bromley Essex
COOK, William Boarder Single M 20 1871 Railway Porter Westfield Norfolk
READ, George Boarder Single M 16 1875 Dock Labourer  Hartfield Sussex

RG12, Piece 1311, Folio 63, Page 21.

Person: COOK, William
Address: 74, Station Street, West Ham, Stratford

If he was a porter in 1901 it may be he simply moved stations from 1891.
Oops........ Forgot to say that Westfield appears to be close to your stated Birth Place
Coe: Middlesex, Surrey, Norfolk, Suffolk – Roll: Suffolk – Hawes: (Hawse)  Norfolk – Burson: Berkshire – Dodson: Surrey – Groves: Sussex, Surrey – Wilson: West Riding – Coleman: Somerset, Gloucestershire – Stanbury: Somerset – Hutton: Oxon – Stott: (Statt).  Devon – Martin: Bucks, Surrey – Henden: Surrey - Starling, Whitaker, Symonds, Flack: Cambs.
