help finding Margaret ( maggie) McInnes b 1830
« on: Sunday 10 October 10 09:01 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am needing help in finding Margaret ( Maggie) McInnes b  2 Dec 1830 Strath, Inverness, Scotland.
Her Parents are Alexander Mcinnes b 1811 KILMALLIE, ARGYLL, SCOTLAND  and Rachel Mcinnes b 1810  Strath, Inverness, Scotland,
siblings are
Duncan b 1837
Neil b 1833
Catherine b 1836
Christina ( Chrissy ) b 1839
Isabella b 1846
Donald b 1849

On the 1851 census Margret and her Father where not mentioned, family records state that they left Strath, Inverness and went to  Edinburgh where they worked and saved for their fare to Australia and the rest of the family joined them later before leaving for Australia.
But Maggie didn't leave with them her cousin also named Margaret McInnes went instead unfortunately dieing on the way
The  family arrived in South Australia  in 1854 and then moved to  Victoria.

She is supposed to have immigrated to Australia later on but I'm not sure when would appreciate any help in finding her.

this is from the previous post  about the rest of the family that may help

Hello Jackie,

It looks like your family emigrated, without Margaret, on board the David Malcolm, arriving Port Adelaide January 1854?

If they moved across to Victoria, is it possible Margaret sailed directly there? in which case she might show up on the pro vic ships lists:
http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide050/PROVguide050.jsp

Is it also possible that she married before emigrating?  As far as the 1851 Scotland census goes - there are several possibilities, with an appropriately aged Margaret McInnes showing up as niece, employee etc.  Looks like a process of elimination for each one!

Sorry I can't be of more help,

regards, brigau

Hello brigau
thank you for your reply and yes you are right about  process of elimination as there are many Margaret ( Maggie) McInnes. I have already checked prov.vic but the two that where found although still possible their age is not correct and doesn't give much detail to narrow it down without paying something I don't want to do until I have more to go on, unfortunately I haven't  been able to find a ships list  etc available on line to check
also the point of marriage is something I did consider but have no proof at this stage.
But I have just spoken to a relative and there is a story that she did marry and possible arrived in Adelaide, Victoria or Queensland Australia  ???

You mentioned

As far as the 1851 Scotland census goes - there are several possibilities, with an appropriately aged Margaret McInnes showing up as niece, employee etc.  Looks like a process of elimination for each one!

where you able to find a few  Margaret Mcinnes  on the 1851 census ???

Hi Jackie,

When I wrote 'several' none are spot on with age and birth place, but seeing that you don't have much to go on, perhaps worth considering; sometimes things got recorded/transcribed wrongly.  The first on the list is Reg. District 119, same as for the 1841 entry for the family.  I don't know much about Skye but Strath & Sleat seem to be fairly interchangeable, at least they're both in the same Free Church district! The Edinburgh entry is probably the least likely.

Two of our family who went to Australia had wrongly recorded ages on the passenger lists - his was too high and hers too low -  I think they took the opportunity to re-invent themselves!

hello brigau

Thank you for the information :)
you have found 2 that I haven't found so thanks again for some more place to search.
I'm not sure but I think the

Edinburgh, St Cuthbert's: 685/2, ED: 48A, Household Schedule: 23
26 Bread St
Margaret Scott, 56, Laundress, Harehope, Peebleshire
Margaret McInnes, 20, niece, Laundress, Edinburgh, Midlothian

is a possibility as you said and I have found a lot myself they do get age, year of birth,  place of birth, spelling of name  etc  etc wrong , so  why couldn't the place of birth be wrong.
The reason I think it is possible is because as I said above she was supposed to have gone with her father to Edinburgh the age and name match and around the right time.
I can't work out why you think it is least likely  ???
Thank you again really appreciate help

Hi Jackie,

Oh your Margaret!! I thought the Edinburgh one unlikely because there is no link to Skye or your McInnes family that I can see.  Can't find the parents in 1851 and the children appear to have dispersed by then.

Here are the Scotts/McInnes:

John McInnes married Christian Scott 1829 Edinburgh St Cuthbert's, her father: Thomas Scott (IGI extracted) mother appears to be Isabella Smellie

1841 Census: 685 ED: 7 Folio: 83 Page: 5
Anchor Close
MCINNES John M 30 Slater Journeyman, Midlothian
MCINNES Christian F 30   Outside Census County (1841)
MCINNES Margaret F 10   Midlothian
MCINNES Thomas M 7   Midlothian
MCINNES John M 5   Midlothian
MCINNES William M 3   Midlothian

Hello Br1gau
Thank you for looking that up
I understand now where you are coming from and  yes it looks like its not the Edinburgh.
What a shame it looked very promising  :-[
The first one you mention

Margaret Mcinnes, 19, Estimated birth year, abt 1832
Relationship: Niece
Where born: Sleat, Inverness
Occupation: House Serv

is supposed to be the Margaret that died on the Hercules so I can rule that out.

This family I have come across a number of time I'm not sure if its her

Household Members:
Myles Mcinnes, 43
Euphemia Mcinnes, 23
Lachlan Mcinnes, 18
Margaret Mcinnes, 15
Godfrey Mcinnes, 13
John Mcinnes, 10
Margaret Mcinnes, 19
Chirsty Mcintosh, 24

so I am left with the rest to choose from
the one with John her age isn't right and I'm not sure who John is but I guess carn't be ruled out
the other with Catherine maybe ???? she has a sister with that name but she is on the 1851 census with her mother so maybe it is her with a cousin or something  ???
I think this is going to do my head in trying to find her and I still carnt find her father Alexander.
I have tried to find her in the shipping records or marriage  thinking it may have reference to her parents but no luck so far. I am not sure where to go next.

thank you again for all your help as I have said it is really appreciated :)
