thank you all for your interest and replies. Yes, I have all the info on thomas HYnes aka Edward Lyons after his arrival in AUst on the lonach in 1825 including  his pardon, death in 1856 and the arrival of wife and two children in 1834.  My problem is his life prior to arrival in AUst.  I cannot find any other information in IReland. Thank you very much for responding. Anniebelle

Anniebelle,

I notice you have an interest in Hayes from Tipperary in Victoria & NSW.

My GGGM was ELizabeth Hayes who married Adam Young at Scarsdale in Victoria 1862, they resided at Smythesdale.  On her death notice in 1870 (28) it stated that she was from Tipperary.

I'm trying to follow up on this branch of my tree at the moment.

Regards

Gerry

Gerry,

Yes, I have ancestors Cornelius and Hanora Hayes who arrived as Assisted Immigrants to Vic in Apr 1854 per 'Merchantman' from Tipperary.  Within a couple of years they were in Maitland, NSW where Honora's brother, Roger Kennedy, was a police man.  They remained at Maitland, then Singleton, NSW until their deaths: Hanora in 1868 and Cornelius in 1871. Their four children were Mary Ann, Bridget, Honora and Joseph.  I don't think there is any Elizabeth in the family.  On the 'Merchantman', also as Assist Immigrants from Tipperary, were Patrick and Margaret Hayes & children.  I have not proven a connection with my Cornelius and Hanora, although possible. I might add that I have not researched Patrick and Margaret though. So unless your Elizabeth is connected to Patrick and Margaret I don't think that she would be connected to my Cornelius and Hanora.

Good luck with your research and thank you for taking an interest in my query.

Thanks for the reply Anniebelle,

My heritage goes back to Catherine Hayes who came out from Tipperary around 1857 maybe on the Rodney, she settled at Smythesdale near Ballarat and married Adam Young in 1862 but sadly she died in 1870 leaving two sons and a husband.

Her death certificate states that her father was John and her mother Elizabeth and she was from Carrigathoher in Tipperary.

I found out yesterday that another person has a lot of family history on Catherine and her family and I was told that a number of the same family came out to Victoria including, Margaret, Bridget, Michael, Edmund, Honora and possibly more.  This person is sending me information via the mail.

Hayes was/is such a popular name in Tipperary and many Hayes came out to Victoria so there is probably no connection but if I find anything that might be of interest to you in my research I'll let you know.

Regards

Thanks Gerry.  Interesting that you also mention the names Hanora and Bridget but I guess these were probably also common names.  Yes, I would appreciate any info you come across which might lead to a connection.
The only other information I have is that my Hanora Hayes, nee Kennedy, and her brother, Roger, came from Kilmore, Co Tipperary.  Absolutely nothing on Cornelius except that he was Catholic and an agricultural labourer on the immigration record, as was the Patrick Hayes on the same ship 'Merchantman'.

Kindest regards,
Anniebelle

Hello Anniebelle,
This fellow Thomas Hynes aka Edward Lyons is my great, great, grandfather.
Native of Co Kildare and convicted of horse stealing and sentenced to Life. Transported to Port Jackson in 1825 on the 'Lonach'. A Ploughman by trade 5'7' grey eyes, fair hair.
His wife Mary Massat and two children Edward and Margaret  travelled to Australia in 1834. They may have been listed as Hynes or Lyons.
By 1837 he has become Lyons and no use of the name Hynes is used again. He was pardoned in 1840.

Hope this information is of help.
Therese

Therese,

Thank you for the posting. Thomas/Edward is my 3x great grandfather.  I have done quite a lot of research on him and my direct descendants from him.  I have the information you posted.  However, I would be interested in communicating with you off line to compare information.  I am descended from the daughter, Margaret Lyons, who married James Hall in 1840. Are you descended from Margaret or Edward, the son?

I shall send you a personal message with my email address if you are interested.
