"The Opal" Grrengrocer's shop on Stephen's Green 1939-1957
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 10:58 BST (UK) »
Trying to locate this shop and its inhabitants for a friend. The proprietor was Arthur Daniel Baker. Any info useful as too busy to get to valuations office at present. Also interested in family who lived above the shop at that time.

Thank you, PM

I dont see a specific listing for an Arthur Baker, grocer... but there is a possible clink

1938
Baker bros., grocers, 47 Thomas street
Baker bros., grocers, 38 Arran quay

1949
Baker bros., grocers, 47 Thomas street
Baker bros., grocers, 38 Arran quay

1959
Baker bros., grocers, 47 Thomas street
Baker bros., grocers, tea wine & spirit merch., 39 Arran quay

Do you know which side of Stephen's green the shop was located ?

will keep checking...

Sorry, no, thats all the info I have at present.....it was a fruit and veg shop, with flats above.
hence greengrocer? Maybe they were other terms for fruit and veg back then? Def. on Stephen's Green. could have been Daniel or Arthur Baker, or - long shot, N. Baker. I will ask about the other addresses you list.

Thank you

I didn't find anything in Thoms 1941  or 1956
plenty of confectioners etc, but no "Opal" or Baker (or greengrocer, as far as I could see)

eadaoin

edit: 1956 - there's "the Opal Sweet shop" 62a Upper Stephen Street - this is just south of Dublin Castle - it was the Ivy Dairy in 1941

Thank you everybody. it turns out that you were both right, and it was in Stephen's Street.
Is there any more info about it 1939-1957, please? Also turns out that this arthur daniel baker had another shop at 21 Winetavern street. i am trying to establish the years in which he traded, and trace a person caled Nelly or Nellie who may have been a tenant above the shop inStephen's street for a friend. It is a long shot.

Thanks again, PM

I believe that I have answered some of this question before especially in relation to RCA at Lower Abbey Street. Could you look back and confirm this and take it up from there.
